Latest opinions on Wal-mart's 9mm ammo ? (Federal, Winchester)

I did Google this first, and found a few reviews, videos, and threads from various forums, but most info was a little older, and as expected, there was a good bit of contradictary info.
I've shot a little of both, over the years, and never had any issues, but a lot of folks feel these are very substandard.
Anyway, I realize neither of these are really self-defense grade ammo, but I'd like to stash a little more practice ammo while it's cheap and available, and am wondering what the current experiences with both of these are.
As always, any advice, info, etc. is much appreciated......

Never found any Federal or Win 9mm that didn't go boom 100%, though various Federal stuff in particular can be quite anemic with the powder load. Matter of fact, Federal bulk .223 is the lowest FPS at muzzle of any brand I know, weaker than several brands of Russian steel stuff I compared.

But then again most US non-NATO loadings are weaker than they used to be period according to many folks.

MD....

I would do my best not to be on the receiving business end of ANY of the 9mm ammo sold at Walmart, Winchester, Federal, Russian or whatever. Out to about 75ft I would say it doesn't make a whole lot of difference on the 9mm stuff. At least I haven't seen a huge difference at the range. I think lethality depends more on shot placement....and luck often times (if you fired the shot, or it missed you, that is).

ymmv.

After 75ft a long gun might be a better choice anyway. At least for me.

I won't shoot the Tula stuff, but I've shot the PPU and Perfecta which are even cheaper than Federal or Winchester and they all have worked for me. Agreed there is no separate wal-mart line of ammo, and that there are a lot of people who just look to bag on wal-mart. Also I shoot it in 40 cal, so I can't say specifically about 9mm, but I doubt they are loading the 9mm any worse than, 38, 40, 45 etc.

I have shot a boat loat of ppu, and like it a lot :thumb:

And i recently shot 200 rounds of tula 45 steel case out of my xds just to see if it was as bad as everybody says ... every round went bang but some did to seem a lot hotter then others, some almost seed like +p they did make my gun filthy :thumb:with a almost with a white sticky film but no failure to fire or feed

To the OP... I have never had issue with the federal value packs, some of the brass seems kinda dirty compaired to premium ammo

The white box winchester seems kinda dirty some times but never had FTF out of them

Just my experience

Thanks for all the replies,guys.
To clarify the OP:
-Yes, I realize Wal-mart doesn't make their own ammo. As some posters observed, I'm just referring to the stuff that's sold there.
-Yes, I'm referring to the brass cased stuff, not the alumnum Federal, which I've shot a few times, and like just fine.
-Yes, I was already aware that it wouldn't be good to be on the "buisness recieving end" of ANY of them.
-I don't know where Billwilla is buying his ammo, but around here, PPU is always noticably more expensive than Fed Champion and WWB, or I'd be happily scarfing up that stuff instead (or Blazer Brass, or Speer Lawman, if they ever had them).
Anyway, I'm primarilly asking about overall quality of the brass-cased Fed and Winny stuff: consistency, reliability, QC issues, as I've been reading about some recent issues with both. Supposedly, the Federal Champion stuff has thinner case walls, and I've read several times that there was/is a manufacturer warning on some of it saying it wasn't suitable for law enforcement use because of this, and have even seen this warning photographed and posted a few times (I just checked a box, and there was no mention of this, though.)
Also, I was in our biggest LGS yesterday, and they had a good bit of Federal that was in a plain white box. It didn't say "Champion" anywhere on the box, so I assume it's somehow different than the wal-mart stuff, but it was priced the same ($14.99). Anyone know if this is identical or not?

I'm pretty certain that the 50rnd boxes of 9mm PPU at my local WM are $12.97.

If the white box Federal stuff was Range, Target, Practice labeled it is the same stuff.
The white box may cost a couple cents less to use so Federal can sell it a couple cents cheaper to the wholesalers.
Sometimes manufacturers will label their goods a bit differently for certain applications.
In this case, the white box Federal may only supposed to be sold to independent dealers and not chain stores.
This way the independents have something that cannot be directly compared to the large chain stores.

Just my theory based on my time in retail.

Well don't care if you don't believe it, there are people that still don't believe wal-mart has a bulk foods aisle with prepper foods and all. I haven't seen the PPU here in about a year but it was usually around a buck cheaper for a box of 50 compared to the winchester stuff. Now maybe if you are comparing it to FMJ winchester it was about the same price, maybe a few cents more a box but that's it. But if you want to compare the cost of FMJ vs JHP as though they should be the same then I am sure someone else will be happy to compare apples & oranges with you.

All of the Winchester White Box 9mm FMJ I have bought at Walmart I never had any issues with. Some Winchester White Box
.40S&W that I bought from Walmart I did have a few FTF but I am 90% sure that was a bad magazine and not the ammo.

Never had any issues with Win White Box 7.62X39mm, Winchester PDX-1 +P 9mm, or Remington .22LR I have bought from Walmart.

Bought and shot Winchester, Federal and PPU at Wal-Mart and never had a FTF or FTE with any of them. Are they probably dirtier than "premium" brands? Yes. But, I expect my guns to become dirty after shooting. I currently do not reload so I'm not concerned about case thickness as long as it doesn't split in my firearm on the first firing. If I did reload the case thickness might play more into my purchasing decision.

The bottom line for me is this; cheap, reliable and dirty ammo allows me to practice more spending the same amount of money while getting desirable results and doing the same cleaning I would do regardless of rounds fired.
