Latest experience buying ammo at Wal-Mart

Yesterday, I went to the nearest Wal-Mart to see if I could pick up a few boxes of ammo to add to my supplies. I waited forever to have someone assist me. I finally had to have them call for assistance. After a long period of waiting for them to find the key to the locked case, one of the male employees looked right at me and said to another male employee, "We've got a lady here who wants to shoot people." Needless to say, I did not smile. He slowly got the ammo out of the case and took it to the register. I asked to have him take it to a register up front as I had other things to buy. I also respectfully spoke with him and asked that he not ever say anything like that again when waiting on a customer...that it was in extremely poor taste. I told him that I had no intention of shooting anyone, but that I did intend to protect myself if I felt threatened. He just made light of it, said he was just making a joke, and that I was making a big deal out of nothing. I told him that I had chosen to have the conversation with him rather than talking with the store manager and that he should take my comment more seriously. As I walked away from the counter, he mumbled something under his breath....just quietly enough for me to be able to hear it but not understand it. Needless to say, I went straight to the Customer Service Manager on duty at that point. I did receive an apology, but...

What would you have done? Has anyone else had something similar happen?

Stop being polite to &^^ holes. You should have smiled sweetly and answered something like, "I use this for rabbits and squirrels. For people I use my AK-47."

But of course I'm a rabid feminist, and according to one board member responsible for the disintegration of the country.

A lot of men are really insecure about something. Wonder what it could be?

Ya well your "rabid" feminism has gone WAY too far. the Male identy is no more in north american, or european culture. Young boys all the way up to men have no idea about their gender identity, because WOMEN are trying to turn us into more WOMEN.

Ya we are insecure about women who feel the need to cuckold us!!! Have you seen lately how men are portrayed in TV, and movies. Bumbling ideots who couldnt do a thing without the "wife" helping him.

reminds me of the 50's but in reverse. NOT somewhere most guys want to go.

As far as the OP goes. You handled that very well indeed. Good for you for saying something to the smart a$$, and "trying" to help him out with the attitude. I hope he got into major trouble for his comment, after you needed to go to the manager, but sadly I would bet he didnt.

Ive found only 2 out of at least 6 to 8 people that i deal with when buying ammo at my walmart are worth a darn to even speak to. Those two know me by name, and are ready to help each time they see me. The other aretheir for their minimum wage checks and dont have one brain collectivly between them. You have to draw them a picture just to get the right ammo out of the case. I wouldnt have hessitated to speak to the manager, and eventell them that i expect an appology from the employee immediatly( if for no other reason to embarrass them). Dealing with idiots is part of the walmart/save some bucks ordeal

I've never had any comments like that, but I think you handled it well. You gave him a chance to understand. He decided to be a jerk and you reported it as you should have. I think maybe lessons were learned, and that's important. I generally tend to shrug off comments like that, but I agree it was in very poor taste. Especially in today's political climate.

It happened in Iowa....but then, what would you expect. Iowa allows same sex marriages. Iowa is getting a little bit better with the concealed weapons issue, but they have a long way to go. I will be happy to return to Arizona ...Oh wait a minute. I forgot. Then I will need to deal with all of the illegals.....

I feel sorry that something like that happened to you, but it goes with the territory of the types of folks walmart employs.

Just curious, why do you purchase ammo at walmart? Is the 1 dollar a box you generally save really worth not supporting your local gun shops, or do you not have a local gun shop? I mean no offense by that question, it is just an honest question...

If I can go to walmart and buy wwb 9mm for 23.95 per 100, and go to the local gun store and buy it for 24.95, I'm going with the local guys, but that is just me. If your local stores gouge people then stick it to them by all means. In my area, though, local guys are as good if not better than walmart prices.

To be honest, I was at the Wal-Mart getting a prescription filled...and as part of my prepping I try to pick up ammo whenever I can. They just happened to have 4 boxes of 45, which I haven't been able to find lately.

I do love to buy from a small gun shop, but it is quite a distance from my home. Only stop there when I am heading in that direction.

I think you were right on with making a complaint - mainly because of the wait to get access to the case. This very thing has happened to me before to the point that I gave up left. They need more keys but I think I understand why there is only one key holder. Let me explain.

The one thing you must keep in mind when dealing with the staff at Wal-Mart is that most are just not that bright. I don't mean to be ugly about it, but I do feel this is a fair assessment. My observation has been that you either speak to someone who is charged with some responsibility, in which case your able to actually have a conversation, or not, in which case you needn't bother. The latter of these, I am convinced, are there as place holders. They are given very basic instructions and encouraged not to think at all. Your story sounds like you encountered one of these non-thinkers and I feel sure you handled things the best way you could have. Any continued attempt to solicit more than the simplest grunt from this person would have been pointless and a further waste of your time.

My general approach before speaking is observe what they are doing and if it involves any brain power beyond breathing then your in good shape. If they are loading shelves, wandering around aimlessly, standing in groups of three or more, then just keep walking as you don't want to waste your time.

I know a great way to avoid that. Buy in bulk after you put enought away you dont have to deal with the jerks. Also I think I would just give them an evil grin and ask what time do you get off or something to that effect. Im the type that wount shut up when I feel somebody want tell me they know better then I do what to spend my money on.

Funny how many people dont remember that almost all the arms that earned us this Nation came from the houses of people who paid for the arms themselfs and gave up there time, and lifes so we could be free. So many people today dont understand what freedom is or even care. As long as they get that new Ipod or can watch there cable tv there set.

I think you handled it well. You at least gave the guy a chance to explain himself adn then only after he persisted in being a A'hole did you go the manager. I probably would have gone directly to the manager the second the slight occurred, which makes you a better person than i :). And even though i chuckled at some of the witty veiled threat retorts that others have posted, if you had used any of those as comebacks then that employee could have quiet legally taken legal action against you for making threats against his person......and given that he seemed like a Ahole to begin with this is a very likely possibility.

I have found that this type of disrespect is getting more and more common. Just look at some of the liberal progressive lefty's that are starting to post on the boards.

You go to cosco or sams or wally world and buy to much of the wrong item and the cashier looks at you like your a terrorist. Do they even realize you are helping to pay their salary?

I would imagine that someone selling a customer ammo should have a degree of respect but if not might be smart enough to conclude that the person buying the ammo just might be armed, so the smart ass comments should be kept to a minimum.

IMHO

I found this to be pretty funny. Back in the day when I was putting my husband through college I was a cashier at Wal Mart, at $6.15 an hour. I worked my ass off in that place and usually brought in $10,000-12,000 per shift for the store. Times that by 5 days a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year and that comes to probably at least 2 million dollars a year? Out of that my wages would have been about $12,000 before taxes.
