anybody catch last nights MEDIUM? i dont usually watch it but the preview had post SHTF "dreams" in the preview.

the main character is a medium, she was having dreams about post nuke SHTF.
she wanted to prep and bought all this dum stuff with the other sheeple at the store. -funny.
she wanted to buy a gun, but her nuetered husband was totally against it.-funny.

then they made the store owner, a "survivalist" a crazy killer that captured young girls and put them in his "bunker" and told them the world was nuked and he and the girl would have to repopulate it.
overall kinda funny, kinda the same old portrayal of "survivalists".
you could probly watch it on NBC.com or ABC whatever it is if ya wanted to.

I saw it.

It pissed me off.
They could have just had the survival stuff in it without making the "survival expert" into a sick, twisted perv that makes the rest of us look bad.

Or maybe it was the goverment's way of teaching the sheeple that we survivalists/preppers are all baaaaaaaaaaad.

My wife and I love Medium but this one got to me. The survivalist character was a good guy at first and very helpful but then they had to turn him into a crazed killer. And the argument about having a gun in the house was typical hollywood. Ruined the show and as usual cast a bad light on people who prepare for the worst.

I was so angry when I saw this episode. It was only that I could use it on my show that held me in place long enough to watch the entire thing.

I was just asked about this stereotype in an interview and I think there are three reasons for it.

1. It just makes more interesting entertainment. It doesn't matter if the character is a hero or villain a survivalist with a gun, clad in cammo that can fight is more sensational then a calm rational family that takes personal responsibility.

2. There are people (especially in the media) that want more and bigger government. Independent and self sufficient people are hard to sell social programs to. None of these people want the general population to be self sufficient. I think modern survivalists are seen as a threat here because we talk about individual sufficiency and responsibility.

3. In the past everyone in rural and even much of "urban" America lived the way modern survivalists lived. They farmed, foraged and stored food, etc. Back then none of these people called themselves "survivalists" but the ones that were called survivalists at that time were well, the people on the fringe digging bunkers in the sticks. I think some of the stereo types are left over from those days. I mean back as recently as the 80s when I was growing up in the coal region of PA, everyone was really a survivalist, just no one thought of themselves that way.
