Brand names are a good start but I really would recommend looking at the quality of the blade itself. I lost an ol timer I carry one time and ran into the academy picked up a decent priced knife made by -BUCK- ill was very disappointed to learn shortly after I opened the package it was a china blade that I still can't get to keep an edge. Ill use a rock before I buy another low quality blade.
I don't know how DIY you are but it might be a cool father daughter project to order a nice blade and make a custom handle and sheath for it.
Just an outside the box idea. Ive seen some blades on amazon search "knife making" blades. Again quality is king especially since its not a pocket tosser.
Either a older schrade DEERSLAYER 150T or a Buck Akonua. either one will be around for her grand or great grandchildren to use....... Buck is around 125$ and i found the twins, 2 150T's for 9$ each, than had em rescaled with green canvas micarta.
That Buck special is a nice blade but not what I would call a Whittler, more of a Wacker.
Imo- for a Carver I would suggest a smaller blade like the Mora's.
Or just bite the bullet and get both, what she really wants, Buck, and what she needs, the Mora.
LT Wight Knives Bushcrafter HC is what I got my daughter. Great bushcraft knife in a steel that she can also lean to sharpen with. Add to that it is American made by a good group of guys.
My fingers wish I would have had a good carving knife when I was younger. Cut myself a lot with wrong tool for the job an learning how to control a blade. There are carving kits but I did not look one of them up. For 50$ you could mix an match up about any two of the above linked knives.
im still after the HUDSON BAY and the HIVERNANT knives, and at the right price a primitive bush knife from Condor..
the hivernaut reminds me of the older green river /robison sure edge
Buffalo skinner's........
I surely do Like a knife with a belly.......
it will come, eventually, the only change i would make to the hudson bay, drill out that last cutlers rivet and add a eyelet. gotta have a lanyard.
