keltec PF9 or other?

IM debating the G36(?) -45 caliber glock I saw on sale used for $430, and a cheaper alternative such as (mainly) the Keltec PF9.

The PF9 is nicer than the P11 due to the trigger pull. IMO

I can get a nice concealable carry in the car or on my person gun for $250 (PF9). But I know the glock (IMO) is a nicer gun.

Im tight on funds.

Should I just wait till I can afford a double-the-price handgun (glock)?

Keep in mind this is going to be a gun I shoot rarely, I think. I just want a protective pistol. And you can put a belt clip on the PF9 and slip it inside my jeans. Nice little option.

Just want to get your opinions. thnx:thumb:

and the gun snob shows up.....

I have owned kel-tecs, and known people who own kel-tecs, and interestingly none have had those experiences.

That being said, I prefer the LC9 for one reason, a manual safety. If I'm to pocket-carry, it makes me more comfortable to know there's a thumb safety.

I've owned two KT's. A P11 and a P32, still own the P32.
I carry a G19.

That said, the Kel Tec's aren't the crap guns people sometimes say they are.
Unrefined? Yes.
Reliable? Yes, or KT will make it so. (great CS)

Neither is what I'd call a range pistol, though the little 32 is a hoot to shoot.
The trigger on the PF9 IS better than the P11 (shot a friends). But neither triggers are great.
They're decent guns for the money, and I've trusted my life to one by carrying it. Never had any issues with either.
It's your call, the Glock is a better pistol, but the Kel Tec isn't a 'bad' pistol.
Both can kill bad guys just as dead. (9 vs 45 debate aside... ;) )

I have two PF9's, other Kel-Tec products, and have plans to get more, like the KSG and RFB.

There are elitists of all kinds, and gun owners are among the worst. Folks knock what they've never even touched, much less fired. I don't play that game, and anyone that plays that game with me can kiss my arse.

I carry my PF9 every day. I wouldn't touch that little clip with a ten foot pole, though. Since it leaves the trigger exposed, you aren't doing better than mexican carry, which has a habit of removing valuable body parts. I have pocket holsters and I carry it most often with a tuckable. When I'm at home for more than a day and it's coat wearing weather, I carry with a generic OWB, since it's small enough it's hard to see, even with a loose coat.

You'll find them on gunbroker for less than $300.

second that, I purchased the belt clip and trigger shoe

both looked cool and seemed well intentioned in theory, but in practice i HAD to ask myself "what was i ever thinking?"

Putting them both together makes for a dangerous situation, especially considering the snaggy edges on the trigger shoe. I filed down the edges on the trigger shoe and greatly improved my comfort, but not enough.

The belt clip was installed and forever uninstalled in one hour. The trigger shoe came off a few days later.

Edit: The PF9 is still my daily carry, and ive owned/currently own more than a few subcompacts to choose from. In my experience it has functioned reliably at any/all range trips and earns my seal of approval. As with any gun YMMV.

And...

Agreed on the harsh recoil, you can add the hogue grip and you can modify an extender for a kahr P series to fit, thats what I had done up until KT came out with the +1. The +1 really puts a nice grip in your hand. Still not going to be a fun range gun though.

The baseplate extender included with the gun is almost useless.

I own a pf9 and can't recommend it as a ccw, yet. I've put over 350 rounds thru it and still have reliability issues. It's much more reliable now than the first 50 rounds I shot but I have been in contact with keltec and will be sending it back. I've heard good things about their customer service so we'll see. But as it stands now I couldn't recommend it for personal protection so you need to make the decision. I've heard once keltec fixes them they are good to go but I'm having light primer strikes on mine at the moment. you also shouldn't have to send a brand new gun in for repairs but hey it costs 250 bucks.

I have a P-11 and a Glock 19. I got the 19 years after the P-11. I have (and do) carried both. The Kel-tec is a long DA trigger, like arevolver. but a small pisol that is easier to conceal when it MUST not be seen. The g-19 (this one, and i have owned 2) is a joy to shoot, harder (though not hard) to conceal. Both go bang every time.

if i thought i would only get one pistol? i would probably go for the G-30 of the 2 you mentioned. I like my P-11 (first "new" pistol i had bought in over 10 years) but i would save more for something else if it were my only. It is fun to shoot i think, but is also a handfull, and my friends don't like to shoot it. Now what is the use of having a gun if you can't go shoot it with friends?

I have a PF9 and it is a fine pistol. My P3AT has nearly 4000 rounds through it without one issue.

Do not bet your life on a firearm that you shoot "rarely".

45 ammo is really expensive compared to 9mm and you need some serious range time.

I have a very dependable PF9 but I've begun always carrying my Glock 23 in .40. I do also have a Glock 19 in 9mm.

Our state's police academy states that most police shootings occur within a ten foot range. A PF9 should do nicely for that.

pf 9

I had a KelTec 380 for years no problem, just got a PF9 as a gift, 250 rounds without one problem. Friends have had problems, company took care of them, life time warranty to first owner. The comment before is true, would not call the PF9 a first gun, so light, the recoil does start to hurt after a while. Both of these are for light carry when I want to be really concealed. Everyday carry is a Glock. Hope this helps.

I have an older Kel Tec P-40. I load for it and it remains decently accurate at self defense ranges. No reliability issues, although I understand that KT no longer makes a pistol in 40. My hand loads run a 155 grain HP at 950-1000 f/s out of that short barrel, which is a lot less stress on the gun than a full power factory load. Less stress on my right wrist too.

they want $250 for one here.

BUT now Im interested in the Sig line- mainly the SP2022 9B... but also lookin at the P250...

I dont think the P250 has the functionalities of the Sp2022....... mainly the decocker which I really like..... dont know why they dont put a safety on it though
