i see they have come out with a new plastic public defender. it looks very cool and im going to the gun show in a couple of weeks and hope to buy a judge public defender in stainless. i reblue and finish guns every day. i have to laugh when i read all the negative comments on the power of the judge. all you hear from the brand name gun experts is it will not punch through much of any thing. it is big and ugly. i you ask if any of them if they would stand in front of the business end of the judge and take a round of 410 000 buck it seems like their mothers just called them home because the street lights came on. all quiet. i cant wait to get that little five shot wonder gun and start the breakin:thumb: on her. i am going stainless i like the plastic but something bout putting 410 shells through a hand gun tells me to go all metal. after i get it i will do a range report for ya all.:D:

The judge is neither a great gun for 410 of 45 Colt. It is a gun that attempts to do both and succeeds, but both are better out of dedicated weapons.

Having said that, I do own one. It's used for an open carry sidearm on the farm especially when going to a place such as a tobacco barn or hay barn where there's not a lot of activity during much of the year.

I keep .45 ready with 1 (maybe 2) rounds of birdshot available because nobody can out draw a snake. You have time to roll the cylinder to the birdshot and shoot a snake. If I happen upon a bobcat that's taken a liking to the barn as I have in the past, I wan't the .45 ready to go.

Ideally I would have a dedicated pistol for both, but this is adequate for my purposes.

I would never count on 410 buckshot for self defense. If you're close enough for it to be effective from a judge, you have plenty of other options that would be much more effective.

That's my take on it too. It would make a fantastic snake gun, but I wouldn't want to use it for self defense when there are so many better options.

I've shot the Judge a lot, and it's a fun gun. But it's more of a range oddity, a conversation piece, than anything else.

Oh c'mon. Give me a break. I would wager that if you asked them to step in front of a .22 short, a stiff kick to the nuts, or even a pellet gun, that the answer would be the same. Did we prove anything about the effectiveness of any of those? Or perhaps we proved that the person has enough common sense to not step in front of them.

Again...the Judge is what it's supposed to be. Up close and personal self defense. Someone breaking in your front door, bedroom door or your car door. Sales seem to be brisk on these things. We like ours and IMHO the Winchester PDX-1 is what the doctor(or Judge) ordered. If possible, try one with various ammo. Shoots the 45LC better than I expected.

Years ago a friend brought over his 410 double.
He was going to show me what his "deer sniper rifle" would do with slugs.
I had a 1/2 sheet of plywood near where I shoot. I laughed my @ss off when the slugs bounced off the plywood. The barrel was 20something inches long. How long is the barrel in the judge?
