Israel ‘at war’, says Netanyahu, as fighter jets target Gaza after surprise Palestinian attack

  • Hamas militants entered Israeli territory in the early hours of this morning, appearing to take control of multiple communities in southern Israel. Fighting is still ongoing in areas of southern Israel.
[*]Hamas fired over 2,000 rockets toward Israel, according to the Israeli authorities.
[*]The death toll is Israel is at least 22, according to Israeli emergency services. Israel’s health ministry said at least 545 wounded have arrived in hospitals. Palestinian media is reporting the death toll in Gaza is 4.
    [*]Israel launched strikes in Gaza.
[*]There are reports of Israeli hostages now in Gaza.
[*]“We are at war and we will win it,” Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video address to the country.
    [*]

Map that shows where Hamas has gained control over, for now.

I have a feeling that Iran will share in Israels retaliation.

Creek,

A decent map.

I'm wondering why the far southern Rafiah check point crossing (mostly for Egypt transits though) not plotted. The US Sinai Support Mission was familiar.

For the Palestinians to tear down border fences and avoid the official entry point points into Israel ..... where the heck do the Pals think they're at: Texas ??

........

I'm joining you in thinking about Iran.

6 day war, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan verses Israel. Israel won.
So now it might end up as them three and Iran verses Israel?
What all four want to think about is how committed is Israel to win.
Plus one other tiny thing. Israel has nukes.
So what would be deemed as acceptable losses for those four, let alone Hamas.

I'm sure that any enemy of Israel is a friend of Iran. You know the old saying.

"The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend".

Maybe the patchup is cosmetic... Iran supports people of it's own religion. It's their national policy. Hamas is not of that religion. So they will never have Hezbulla level support.

Having said the above, Iran of course needs a spanking every now and then. Reasons are not necessary.

Rigel,

Any estimate on the shelf life of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia once the North Slope oil fields open up ? Saudi is really Damman area and rich Saudi must have a security establishment to protect what remains. Vinell Corporation of USA won't do this.

An audit of rich Saudi might show that Saudi could be enroute to something like the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies or the Malay Straits settlements.

I'm hearing that Iran might be experiencing a different form of government.

Now for the funny of the day brought to you by the peace loving Russians.

"We call on the Palestinian and Israeli sides to implement an immediate ceasefire, renounce violence, exercise the necessary restraint and establish, with the assistance of the international community, a negotiation process aimed at establishing a comprehensive, lasting and long-awaited peace in the Middle East," she said in a statement.

It's really bad. Hamas is posting videos of massacred Israeli civilians, hostages taken, and overrun military outposts with all personnel killed. I expect the casualty numbers will skyrocket in the coming hours. And that is before the Israeli's retaliate, which when they do will be harsh. I don't think Biden could hold the Israelis back any longer after this.

Hamas is clearly slaughtering unarmed civilians. One of the least Christian aspects of my character is that one should be careful where they place the bar, because I'll go there with you. Forgiveness and all that will come later when I have time for reflection.

Digging into my bag of historical lessons, it is clear what the correct response is here. Kill every living thing in the Gaza Strip, raze every building, salt the earth, and poison the wells.

I agree. At 05:00 this morning there were 22 reported dead, with no reports from the other side. Me thinks this one will escalate.

I dont understand how this was so successful by Hamas. With all the military at the borders and preparedness, it seems as though the IDI, IDF, Mossad, Aman and Shabak intelligence agencies were asleep at the wheel considering it was the 50th anniversary of the 1973 war !?!?!?!?!
That would be like the CIA, ATF, US armed forces, police, Homeland security, NSA and others taking a week off on vacation right before the anniversary of 9/11.
Or is it the perfect excuse for Israel to finally crush Hamas without restraint?? So many questions.

It looks very well coordinated. Hamas came in through multiple corridors and they are using drones to attack Israeli military responders. They are sending kill squads are going door to door murdering and capturing people. This is a massive gut punch to the Israeli government but the response will be all out war with Palestine. Perhaps this conflict will finally come to an end.

But so far, the mainstream media has been very reserved in the coverage despite all of the footage coming out. That makes me think the US Government would prefer to downplay this attack.

Unlike Western countries, Israel, Russia and other countries do retribution right. It'll be swift and wreck total ruination. Of course the feckless UN will be wringing their hands, blaming Israel and begging for restraint. This is a big escalation for the region and globe. As another poster stated, this could ease China's entry into Taiwan, although I only give that a 10% outside chance of happening.

Saudis... and other arab monarchies keep their militaries weak in case they turn on them and try to overthrow the King. So they depend on trusted special forces units from other countries.

The name you are looking for is SSG Brigade 4. Or at least it was, 20 years ago.

Rigel,

No, was thinking of SANG - Saudi Arabia National Guard. Vinnell Corp was thin veneer with the legitimate view that they were advisors to SANG. SANG was much American, Brit and a couple of other Western soldiers.

The backup, with a day-long trip, was staged in Diego Garcia, BIOT.
