IC706 AH-4 Diamond HF80CL ... mobile...

I like ICOM and Diamond.

I'm VERY tempted to try to salvage the back half of a Diamond C213-SMA cable that was broken at the radio end.

Since this is coax, and the AH-4 doesn't have a coax SO239 connector... I'm in a little bit of a puzzle right now.

I seem to have two BASIC obvious choices at the moment.

1)Use the old COAX, and find a way to splice and wire the ground for the AH-4.

2)Use a SO239 on the antenna mount I have, and wire the output of the AH-4 to the center of the SO239, and then run a braided cable from the AH-4 to the vehicle frame.

I am actually willing to try both methods, and document the results online.

I plan to measure the VSWR (or something similar) at the base of the radio.

I plan to measure the ERP (or something similar) on the same plane front to back, and one side off vehicle center. I'll also TRY to find a way to measure the ERP vertically if I have the time (figure out a fast way to do it).

And, I plan to try all of the above, at the center of the common HAM HF bands.

So, lets see who will be right after it is all done.

This should take me about week, maybe a more if the weather sucks.

The AH-4 is a long wire tuner. If your ok with 10-20m operations the Diamond HF80CL might work, but forget 40 and 80m. It might tune those bands but the losses will be high.

To make any of this work the ah4 output and the antenna need to be very close, under a foot at best. Antenna ground goes to vehicle ground and the center pin goes to the ah4 output. Ah4 ground to the frame ground.

if you need 40m then a 102" stanless CB whip will work. For 80m the ah4 wants close to 24ft long antenna legnth to properly work.

I have the Yaesu Version of your setup. A 102" CB whip will let me work 40 through 6 meters with no problems. Trying to get the tuner to match that 80 meter monoband antenna to any of the higher bands is going to be an exercise in frustration.

I have the 10m version ,the Diamond HF 10CL. really good antenna have made a ton of contacts out of my Jeep with it and an old Radio Shack HX10.
