I alrady talked to a recruiter and I want to join in a few year's. I was wondering how much do you make when you join? What rank do you start out as? How many year's do you have to serve in order to get a pension?

Thank's.

I was planning on serving for 20 year's but I wanted to know if I could get a pension if I served like 15. There's a few thing's that worry me 1. getting shot. 2. coming back and not being able to get a wife(I want to have a wife and kids before I die. I plan on joining at 18. Can I live on the base and put my salary in savings? I want to be able to retire and never have to work again but still have money to do the thing's I love.

I DO NOT want to join for the money. I have wanted to join since I was really little. I want to join because I feel I owe it to the country and I have other reason's.

Dont I need to go to college for 2 years in order to start out as a officer? I was looking at the different thing's I could do and I was interested in alot. I want to start out as infantry then do a different job(weapon's maintenance) then learn how to work on the tanks and trucks. Im not sure if this is true but the recruiter said that when I enlist I can do a certain job(he had a book I could look through on all the different one's.) then a year or 2 later I can do a different one.

4 year degree is an officer, you can sometimes collect a pension at 15 years. If the military is downsizing, and are forcing you out at 15 years, sometimes they will offer a partial retirement or a lump sum severance package.
IF you're in a high demand MOS you WILL NOT be switching jobs unless you're medically incapable of doing your present MOS. Even then they usually just stick you in an office doing paperwork for your original MOS.
You should join as an 0311, only job in the marine corps (just like corpsmen are the only real men in the marine corps, says it in the name ;) )
What's an 0311? Wont I have a higher chance of being killed if I am infantry for 15 year's? How much do you make when you get a half pension? What sort of benefit's do I get after?

You get access to VA loan which doesnt do much as you still must qualify, you can sign up for the GI bill, lifetime access to our wonderful VA hospitals (use at your own risk)

You sound worried about getting killed I highly suggest you dont join, its the military. You seem all caught up about money and retiring which is another reason to not join. If you make it 20 years you get half of your basic pay 40 years you get full.
Im 14 and im curious about joining. I want to join when im 17.

0311 is your basic grunt, yes you have a higher chance of being killed, but if you want a cushy job join another branch. You take whatever rank you retired at, half the monthly salary, and that's what you get per month. You get full medical and dental benefits after you retire.
Cant you work in the armory as well?

I know it's not like the movie's.

Im not sure what I would want to do after I get out that's why I was mainly concerned about the benefit's lol. I was planning on living on the base then saving most of my money. This is probably a stupid question but can you shoot civilian firearm's on the range? Do they give you free ammo when you shoot on the base?

btw my school does not offer jrotc or anything like that at all.

To the OP, take everything with a grain of salt...it's what you make of it...having great scores helps tremendously. Hang with the upbeat, decent guys, stay clear of slackers and dirt bags, keep your mouth shut and listen and observe and you'll do fine. I got recommended for, and had two opportunities for becoming commissioned BEFORE I got out of basic training. When it looks like you know what you're doing, and other guys start watching you to see how things are done, you'll be spotted as a leader. They'll pull you aside one day and offer you some options. One was for prep school for the Naval Academy, the other was for the PLC program which I began pursuing. I switched over to Army for an easy commission and easier life as I'd married and had children and ended it with the 10th Mountain Division.
This may also be a dumb question but what's the difference between the army and the marine'? Like what do they do thats different? And can someone please explain reenlistment bonus's?

I dont want to join for the money. Im just curious about it. Like I said I have plenty of reason's for wanting to join.

When I say what's the difference between the army and the marine's I mean why do the marines have a reputation for being more badass than the army? Do marine's perform tougher tasks and more intense training?

The correct answers is...Don't.

Join the Navy instead.

And no I'm not joking.
The pay is the same.
The life is better.
Less likely to catch a bullet from some dip Jihadi.
More likely to learn a marketable skill for after you get out. Every sailor is a technician.
You take your bed, shower, and cook with you wherever you go.

No disrespect for the Marines. I hold them in the highest regard. I'd just rather be a squid.
I want to learn how to fight. Do they teach you that in the navy? How to shoot under stress? How's life better?

Ok so what branch should I join? Im confused now. I want to fight/do good for my country and I was thinking I will join the marines. But now you guy's say I should join the navy. But in the navy your basically on a ship the whole time. What do you guy's do while your on the ship? I looked up what it was like in navy bootcamp and marine boot camp and in the marine one they did physical training but they did not do anything close to what the marines did in the navy one. Do they teach you all the fighting skill's and teach you how to shoot? are you issued any weapon's in the navy ? can you live on base like the other branch's or is ''base'' the ship your assigned to?
I have also seen people from the army and navy that brought there uniforms and some gear home can you bring any of it home in the navy? It would be cool to pass own a helmet or something if I have kid's.

Wait so Im not even issued a m9? I thought assumed they issued everyone a firearm. And you only shoot once or twice a year? What job's are there to do on the ship? do you ever shoot any full autos? how long do you do your specific job for? what else is there to do in your free time?
sorry about all the question's

If you were to pick between the two which would you rather join army or navy? I want to try to get into something specialized no matter what. Delta force, seals, marine recon etc or be a green beret or a ranger.
