Haha! I've BEGGED the old man to grow a beard and let his hair "loosen up a little" since he's retired. I kinda have a "thang" for scruffy looking guys -- probably why I was with a biker when he met me.

Anyways, he just can't do it. A couple of days is all he lasts with facial hair and when he tries to grow his high and tight out he looks like a baby duck. :rofl:

Poor guy ... I think he's been sporting the JBT look for so long (USAF then straight to OHP) that he just doesn't know how to pull any other look off.

 

LOL. My hair is driving me crazy. I actually use a brush these days. It's a PITA but I'm willing to try it for a bit. But I think I'll end up doing the same as your husband. It'll all come off. I'll get back to polishing black boots and scratching BDUs. I can't seem to get away.

Shame because a friend said, now you look like a biker. Wasn't the look I was going for but I laughed. I just wanted something different after years of enforced haircuts.

 

My husband looks like a jihadi terrorist. A balding one, at that. Wild beard in front, a fringe of hair in the back. I need to get the trimmers and get him down to a half inch beard again. He is up for that, but the cleanup is a lot of work.

 

I can't imagine that it is too much work--I have a pair of (electric) hair clippers with a 1/4" "comb"--I just run it all over my face to keep most of the hair at 1/4" (well, once a week). Then I actually shave my neck (again, once a week).

I do the hair clipper thing before a shower, and the shave afterwards, I'm guessing the total time is not much over 5 minutes, once a week.

(I do cover the sink with a towel when doing the hair clipper thing, then gather it up, take it outside, and shake it out (to avoid clogging the sink drain).)

 

I was clean shaven until I met wife.

Now I look like a lovechild of Grizzly Adams and Carrot Top.

I definitely don't style or comb it either.....

Bar Soap and water, towel off....I'm oily enough without any further conditioner or whatever....

InfScout, how's this for a compromise: shave your face (it'll grow back quick), but put all your hard-earned locks in your military hat/cap. If you don't take it off during class, no one will complain about the Crosby, Stills and Nash-ing you got going on under that hat.

Maybe you could cut your hair military-short on the sides to look military-sharp with a hat on. After hours, you can let your hair down, lol. It's quite the style these days.

 

Other than growing a beard and hippy hair to travel in Europe when I got out of the army I've always had short hair. It changes from buzz cut ,to flat top to short side and a longer on top. No facial hair though. I always say its so someone can't grab it in a fight ,which is true, but I don't get in fights .

 

Finally, a conversation that isn't "yet another" spinoff thread.

I stopped cutting my hair and shaving when I was 16. I've had long hair ever since. I went from a really long ZZ Top type beard to a shorter one that's easier to maintain. Mostly I did it because I hated the constant maintenance, but also because I hate the look of sharp cut edges and such. Too foo-foo for me. I prefer a more soft and natural look and I think it suits me well. It seems to suit most people I see with it also. I also won't wear a "costume", not even for weddings or funerals. For the same reason.

If you have to go high and tight for business reasons, well, so be it. We do what we have to do. I have always avoided jobs that required it, but I'd do it if I had to.

 

I go high and tight, or high and hawk every now and then, last time i did, scared the hell out of girl child, she had asked me to trim up, so , well i did. she was glad when it went back to scruffy old guy look. LOL

I would do that but I'm still pretty skinny and have been told I look like I have cancer and undergoing chemo or something. I gather it's not a good look for me.

Just this morning, my wife looked at me and said, "Damn." I asked what she was talking about and she said she had a dream last night that I cut my hair. She is all ate up about the change for some reason.

 

My wife said my mullet “was embarrassing”. I told her “get me another beer”.

Well, I have grown my hair to about the middle of my back and when I go to work I have to put it in a Ponytail. My wife doesn't really like the long Hair. She deals with it as I am cleanly shaven.
It would take years for me to grow any type beard stuff. I must have Indian or something like that as I have never been able to grow a Stash or Beard. Even after a couple weeks, you have to look hard to see any growth.

 

I still get a modified high n tight , for some reason the barbers around the army shoppettes call it a high skin fade and trim the top, but it's the same as I've gotten since early 90s.

9th Virginia cavalry Co D (living history) is always looking for horsemen. Modified grooming standard accepted... if you can't shake the military bug.

 

Im the stereotypical old mountain cowboy. About mid april, i get out the horse clippers and cut my hair down to stubs. Ive inherited the big family forehead as life goes on so it dont take long. Cut it once a year. Got an old school mustache, kind of a Quigley look. Mid October the razor gets put away till may. By November im full on mountain man. Cool in summer, warm in winter. The horses and dog do the same thing so the wife is out voted. She dont like long or stubble, she likes normal, but then shes a flatlander from the city so, whatever.

So, coming back to this thread I started.

Today, I let my wife cut my hair and I shaved. It dawned on me I'd probably not be presenting the right appearance for new recruits so I finally said, "Just do it." After all, we need to present a good appearance for them if for no other reason than to show them a good example of military appearance and bearing. So I'm back to wearing that uniform (just as I thought I was free ).

My only problem is she cut me very short. I looked in the mirror and said, "Damn... now I look like that transgendered girl from Parkland School. Am I suppose to start saying, "My life is more important than your guns" or something? She didn't like the joke at all.

I had long hair for most of my younger years. Then I got a real job and cut it back to a high and tight. Then one day a buddy looked at me and asked why I bother (getting a little thin). I shaved it after that and haven't looked back since. I just grow the handle bar mustache extra long now.

 

Well, yesterday went well enough. One of the recruits is a retired Army CWO (pilot I think). A few others have some type of military exposure of one type or another.

Seems like a decent enough group, and we have 9 in the class. Finally have enough to really accept putting in the time required but the instructors. I got they through an initial class on Attention, Parade Rest, At Ease, and fall-in and fall-out.

Also basic ways to correctly respond to the instructors they will in the proper manner. How the correctly ask questions is key since former citizens don't know the proper way to do that in many cases.

I only had 3 hours of class but it seemed to go well.
