We stay ready for hurricanes.

After living in this area for over 40 years, you get accustomed to all kinds of storms.

Unless it is Cat3 or better, we just hunker down.
Over Cat3, it would be time to head to higher ground.

We live in the eastern part of Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay.

 

I would say it's time to get out of there. I've been watching the news all day and you could be almost a direct hit. And this thing is turning into a monster. I'm worried about my daughter and other family in Mass too. From what they are saying it could come up through central Maine where I live. It would hopefully be downgraded by the time it gets here. Everyone please stay safe.

I also have properties on the coast (for work) that I need to keep an eye on.

For my house though - the first layer of basic preps is enough. (Charlotte area, NC) I grew up with hurricanes on the South Texas coast.

And I'm about 14ft above flood plane - if it gets that high, we have bigger problems :

I'll be flying down there today to get the properties in order. Good thing for this board. Being in Texas, I often forget about hurricanes. I need to have my guys down there watch the news. TP

I just heard Charleston SC or even NC coast as a possible Cat 3...more then enough to stay sharp about.

 

Yep, the weather man here said he is calling for a cat 2 but he
believes that it will probably be a cat 3...I've been in two of these
things (Can't remember the names, I'll ask the Lady of the house)
and it was really hairy there for awhile. That's why I'd like us that's
in the general area to start paying heed. It's not being paranoid
it's just being aware of the situation...

 

Already prepared for hurricane season, started back in March. All I'll do now is make sure both vehicles keep the tanks full and top off my fuel storage in the shed. Tested the generator a couple weeks ago. Food/water preps good to go. Had two "questionable" trees in my yard cut down last month.

I'm far enough inland that in reality I only have to worry about wind damge to the roof shingles and power outages. Flodding not a concern unless you get caught out in it when the roads get river-like for a while.

 

Have all my canned food, bottled water, extra propane, etc. Always prepared, but this year we have a Winnebago with a nice generator in case we lose power. Just have to go over and get it from inside storage, once a storm goes through. :thumb:

Last I heard a few days ago everyone thought this storm was going to go into Florida. I woke up today and had several missed calls and text messages from people at work already starting to prepare. Everything at home is pretty much done except for a few extra cases of water and another gas can to have on standby.

The thing I hate most about hurricanes is that my poor wife has to hunker down at the house with my son by herself. Every time there is a storm I have to be at work. Living at the beach has its up and downs I guess.

What do you do at the beach, Rogue? I've had jobs like that, where is some natural disaster happened they wanted us there. I always called them FROM MY HOUSE to check up on them.
Natural disaster = me at home with my family. Never an option otherwise, and non-negotiable.

I ll be putting up hurricane shutters for all the rich folks along the beach. My better half is a property manager around here so when the hurricanes come along i get to make some money putting shutters up and hauling the boats to the marina. Damn rich people they have so much stuff but never use it. Moving patio furniture sucks but in this economy 45 buxs an hour doing this stuff isnt bad.

 

Sitting on my boat in Miami watching this one. I will report in when it starts to blow! Filled up the truck, checking my engines, sitting tight for now....

I remember Hurricane Opal that blew thru here in 95 or 96. I was in 6th grade and we had schools closed because of the weather. BTW we lived near Athens Ga at the time, which is NE Ga. So even way up here in the boonies we can still be impacted
