potato, toothpaste, and salt makes a battery. shorting the wires (connected to the battery) ignites the cotton! Ingenuity at it's best!

 

I can see it now post SHTF:
"Okay get me a potato some salt and tooth paste and a length of wire.
Hurry we don't have a lot of time!"

Just wondering if it had something to do with the potato (we used a red one instead of a white one) and the toothpaste was regular crest I believe.

I really wonder if the brand of toothpaste has anything to do with it. I'm betting it has something to do with the chemicals in the paste... I'll *take this with a tablespoons of salt* until I know it works, though. Pun intended...

Any ideas as far as substitutable materials? I know you can do something similar with lemons to make a battery...
