This is probably a real dumb-arse question, But generally how loud is an SKS? I currently own a Mauser 98 and I get complaints from the neighbors who live 200 yards or so away.

Probably has to do with the ammo more then the gun, But i imagine it would be quieter then my good ol K98, right?

I definitely will buy a .22LR Later down the line, but an SKS Is my priority right now because i live in New York, AKA The land of communists.

I was going to suggest a suppressor, but I guess that's out if you are in NY. You could always goto a range, but that's costly. At least a 22 isn't that loud, and CB's and Colibri/SuperColibri ammo is available, and it is so quiet they probably wouldn't notice it if they had the windows open with traffic going by. You don't really need a silencer if you have a .22 unless it's over 50 ft away. The slow speed causes the bullets to drop like rocks after that. But it's fun to plink anywhere you want to!

The sks is so freaking loud the sonic boom kills everything in its wake. Its like a massive bulldozer of death just by using sound.

Its so loud the muzzle report bounces off the moon and you can hear its echo a few days later in the sky. Some people call this sound "thunder". The "thunder" you can barely hear is when the sounds waves bounce off mars or jupiter, but that takes a few years to come back. The cool thing about the sks, you can sit on the porch with your grand kids and listen to the "thunder" and tell them that was you shooting your sks years ago.

Its so loud, if you shoot at a deer, the deer will die from the sound waves alone. I have heard of deer exploding from just the sound waves. It gets really nasty cleaning exploded deer blood off your stand. Be sure to wear safety glasses, you dont want blood splatter to get in your eyes.
