I have been invited by a FaceBook friend to stay at his farm outside Holly, Michigan. Nice offer, but it seems to close to urban sprawl, and only 53.5 miles from Detroit, and I'm a white Montana man.

Can anybody tell me more. I here there are no jobs there.

See the bit thats bolded? thats why you should be extremely careful no matter WHERE it is...

I would never meet anyone I had only met on the internet unless I was very very sure they where genuine, and even then, on the first meet, I would have all kinds of backup with me.

Holly

Hey,

New member here. I've been watching the board for a while and haven't posted until just now.

Re: Holly. I actually lived there 11-12 years ago. (1997-1998)

At the time it had the highest crime rate in the area. 2 Murders per year compared to 0 in the surrounding towns. (A real statistic of the time.) - This mentioned not so much as a deterrent, but should actually highlight just how little crime there is there.

At the east side of town there's a police station and north from there (on the same street), there is a large campground / recreational area.

There aren't any jobs there. The best you can get is as a worker at a fast food chain. If you go north to Flint, there may be something there, although keep in mind that the entire area is going through a depression because Holly is in the shadow of Flint, where GM has most of it's manufacturing. There's a Mall in Flint atleast? Most of the jobs are going to be south of there.

If you like hiking, there's plenty to be had in that general area, although, I'd recommend heading north to the upper peninsula. (They call it the "U-P" there. - Mostly it just refers to the north side of the state.)

Let us know what you think of the area if you decide to go.

I've spent a lot of time in Michigan (upper and lower), and I've never heard anyone call northern lower Michigan the UP. Da UP is nort o da bridge.

I live just outside Kalamazoo, that’s about 2.5 hrs from Detroit. What is your concern?

True there are little work opportunities here but I don’t know what you can do. Medical field is looking if your a RN etc.

My company has not hired anyone new. Might be better off work wise down south.

the issue should not be of Detroit being an hour south; but being the suburbs of Flint and Saginaw. Both of those cities have worse demographic and similar crime statistics per person and would be more of an issue then Detroit. I take it that is what you are concerned about... However for every rose there is a thorn, Holly is a great community and the surrounding area is very rural. Hopefully you understand that certain underlying elements are present everywhere.

I live about 1 1/2 hours north of Holly but did some work down there building Home Depots. Holly is a decent place, much better than Saginaw where I am at. There really are not many jobs here unless its medical or some technical. If you happen to travel then use common sense and avoid strange larger cities at night. The west side of Michigan is much cleaner and nicer in most places. Enjoy

What are you talking about?

There are no jobs anywhere in Michigan. I'm considering becoming an escort.

What exactly is your concern, being a white guy while visiting a place 53 miles from Detroit?
Dude I'm half white, quarter black & quarter native american, and a ****.
Detroit is fine, just mind your own business and use common sense. I live 3 miles north of Detroit.
When in doubt travel in a group.

Can I go stay there?

Seriously if I were you, I'd stay the hell out of the mid-west. There are no current job opportunities. Every week in my area things slow more, since the first of the year 2 major employers in my city went under, forever. Next big town over, almost everything is at a stand still. Even the illegal aliens are getting the hell out of dodge. I see the current economic situation to further escalate into a spiral to hell.

A truly eye opening article about what has become of Detroit...

The Detroitification of America
From the March 2010 Trumpet Print Edition »

Like a forgotten downtown billboard, Detroit proclaims a warning about the rest of America for any who will stop and look.

 By Robert Morley
If ever an American city was a warning for the nation, it is Detroit. Its crumbling mansions, overgrown boulevards and abandoned factories drive a message home to those who will pay attention. We cannot afford to ignore this once-great city. Why? What killed Detroit is killing America.

Detroit used to be synonymous with wealth and prosperity. It was a city humming with big-finned cars and Motown rhythms. Factories churned out products that ended up on store shelves around the world. Full employment empowered high salaries, flourishing schools and manicured storefronts, with flashy neon lights lining the boulevards. Multiple generations of families shared the same streets and barbecues.

In its heyday, Detroit had the highest median income and highest rate of home ownership in the country. It also had one of the highest standards of living of any major city in America—and hence, probably the world. People flocked there to transform the American dream into reality.

Today, the view from General Motors world headquarters, downtown at Renaissance Tower, is different.

I have been to MoTown a few times and ate at the Rams Horn on many occasions and we actually had a good time there about 10 yrs ago. Nowadays I would probably steer clear of that area and even across the border in Windsor.

The U.P. is a good place to bug out to as there is alot of nothing up there so you will need to be up on your wilderness survival techniques. The Porcupine Mts is the largest natural reserve on the east side of the Mississipi river and when tshtf it will probably be the most populated place in the U.P.

I've lived in Fenton for the last several years and that is the first I've heard of this! hahaha

I'll call your bluff! You'll have to prove it.

As far as Holly, it isn't as upscale as Fenton or Grand Blanc, but your big stores are close by in those 2 towns. Probably not many jobs unless you can work at Genesys hospital or are willing to drive to Auburn Hills or Pontiac way.

For the sole purpose of bugging out it seems Montana would be better, best place in MI would be the UP if you are really hardcore or Alpena/Atlanta area or possibly Caseville, Port Austin area. Holly wouldn't even be on my radar as a bug out location, but we don't know anything else about your situation now. You'll have to decide if Holly seems better I guess.

Howdy all, New user here. Just signed up tonight. I live 15 miles south of Detroit. The further North, South, East and West of Detroit proper you go, the more the more "light complected" people get.

Here in the City I live in, the black to white ratio is most likely 10-1 in favor of whites. But there are other minorities around here. I always thought Holly was "White Boy Central" myself. Guess it has changed. Most well-to-do whites in this area live in Sheby Township and parts north. Also over in ROCHESTER HILLS is another, many million dollar McMansions.

Anyhow, there ya go... Hope it helps.

Disclaimer: I ain't got a thing against black people. Despite the fact that two black and one Mexican cop shot my cousin in cold blood, and let him die behind a house in Detroit. Jesus said that I have to forgive, and I do.

HA!!! We live in Michigan and would love to move to NW Montana and have wanted to for some time....stay the hell away from Michigan for multiple reasons. But the main one is no jobs, and future looks bleak at best not only in job sector but also in housing sector...one of thee top worst states economically in the country

I spent my early years in the Gladwin - Clare - Midland area. Not a bad place to grow up in but there's just no work to be had and hasn't been for a long time. Real estate is cheap. If you had a method of earning a living by internet or were willing to drop the bucks to buy a viable farm you could make it.

This is the best answer concerning the relationship between Holly and Detroit.

Michigan is a great state with a couple of crappy cities. Even most of the suburbs around Detroit are fine in terms of crime and what-not. My desire to move out of the Metro-Detroit area is because I want more land to play around on, not because I can't find a nice community to live in.

to be honest, detroit area changes quite a bit, mount holly is pretty ways away. after about 20-25 mile roads, it gets fairly wide openg, i grew up in north detroit. Once you get past saginaw/mount plesant, it gets really sparse for most areas. That would be the primo bug out area if you had time to get up there, quite windy though.

You'll be fine. I live about 20 miles north of Detroit and don't worry about being a victim of crime. In Holly, you'll have no problems. Actually, if you're afraid of a race related crime (as it sounds you are, since you mentioned your race) I've heard (who knows how reliable, but it was from multiple sources) that there is a decent sized white supremacist population around the Holly area.
