Light weight plastic, decent caliber for all family members to shoot, ammo is popular ,and can carry more ammo than heavier loads.

Glock pros - Strong track record, reliable and accurate, strong gun smith support
Glock cons - Grip non-ergonomic (fat and square), grip angle bad, and No hammer

XD9 - pros - Good ergonomics, grip angle good, better trigger, reliable and accurate, can use M9 and some others modified mags, cocked and chamber indicator
XD9 - cons - no hammer, no gun smith support only factory repairs

any suggestions?

ouch, ouch, must bite my tongue, ouch, ouch - cant, hold, it,,,,,,,

NEITHER!!!!!!

oopps

I do not like a pistol with a safety on the trigger. There, you just had to ask, didnt you.

If I had to pick - I say go with the springfield. I've got this strong dis-like of the glock. The glock is like a republican or democrat, every time I see one I look away with disgust.

Sorry, I'll leave now.

Ohh yes i could not AGREE with kevin more. Yes I know in another post I have an XD 40 listed as one of the pistols I own, but what I didnt say is that I have been trying to sell it for the past 4 months. If your looking for a good, reliable, cost friendly, accurate gun, then let me recommend FN Herstal. This is the company that pretty much makes all the heavy weapons for our military, the M240 Bravo, the 249 Saw etc..One thing that has been HEAVILY overlooked are their Pistols. http://www.fnhusa.com/products/firearms/group.asp?gid=FNG001&cid=FNC01 I own the FNP-40, and the only bad thing I can say about it is that I wish i would have bought one sooner. I must say this is definately a sleeper pistol, its too bad not more people know about it.

I started my life with a 1911 (really, I was birthed with a 1911 in my hand).
I carried a 1911A1 for 30 years
I own a Glock 19, I carry it more than a 1911A1.
I would place my life and the life of my child in the hands of either weapon. I would not do that with a Browning HiPower or a Walther or a Sig. And I Do love the hHI Power
nuff said.

I have been "stuck with" every handgun/rifle combo you can think of. The only reason I like the Glock is that it fires everytime, just like the 1911. PPl seem to respect a bullet in the chest and rarely question it's diameter. There is alot of hand wringing going on about stopping power and all that. If you are whinging on about stopping power, you either need.
A: a larger gun or more practice with the gun you have. EH?
B: a whole bunch of blokes with lotsa firepower.

Its not that really, I could care less what caliber I shoot someone with (I dont think anyone would argue over a few in the chest/leg, they are gonna be down either way). Heck I just about have em all. Its the Glock itself for me. My friend owns the 9mm version and I have seen that thing jam on him at least once a month everytime we are at the range. And to add to that, I think its an uncomfortable gun to hold, and im not a huge fan of their sights either. But thats just me. To each their own.

(sitting down, getting ready for the hate mail, flames, name calling, etc.)
Go with a glock...no springfields allowed..espically that 1911 thing that some have sworn by...
a self defense firearm is a personal choice, read what you can on all of your choices, find a friend with some of the contenders, try before you buy.
All of the replies are personal expierences with the different makes.
Get ready for it......
I will not tell you mine, and how a P.O.S. 1911, will never come into my house, even as a hammer for roaches......
OK, go for it......:D
OH...MY....GOD............I just insulted the 1911....I must be going commie.....

Check book in hand, about to purchase the XD9, than I picked up an FN. It was super nice, but it wasn't an FNP9. 6 months ago I decided to purchase a Glock 19. Small, light weight, high capacity, indestructible, and popular (the Toyota Camry of 9mm's). Decisions. This always happens to me.

6000 rounds plus in and out of my Glock 19 without a single jam and that is without cleaning. That is not the case for alot of the other brands of guns, above and below the price range, unless you are able to call for a time out during the fire-fight to clean your weapon or to clear a jam.

And yes I am a ugly gun owner and proud of it ! :)

Honestly, it makes sense to get what fits your "style" but I can highly recommend the XD-9 as in comparison to a Glock, it is a completly different weapon, it has machined steel parts, not stamped sheet metal, it has a proper grip angle, a grip safety, a true single action design, and a few others. as far as reliability, check this http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/review/XD-9_Tactical.htm they give some pretty good info and links to the 9,000 round test as well as the 20,000 round testing. The Glock set a standard for "FBI" type testing, the XD platform has now written the book, as these have been tortured 20x more than a Glock, and never fail to fire. I have a Springfield XD-40 that I have put over a thousand rounds a month through, and as of right now we are at about 14000 rounds, and no failures, breakdowns, etc. although I will say that I am pretty good about cleaning my weapons, as a happy weapon, is a clean weapon, and a clean weapon will thank you :)

What's good 9mm ammo? 115 JHP sounds as good as any to bulk up on.

this sounds cool, if true:

"...one of the XD-9's most intriguing features. If you already own a metal high capacity 9mm magazine from S&W, Beretta, SIG, CZ or others, it can be modified to fit the XD-9 and still be usable in its parent pistol. The XD-9's mag release cut is a half-circle in the top-center of the magazine body, while most other mags have it on the side. Put a new cut in your hi-cap mag for the XD's center catch and your in business."

It's a done deal. I'm a proud owner of an XD 9. Carries well my 6' 3" 225 lbs frame. My son and his friend put 100+ rounds through it. I shot a 16 round magazine.

Two things threw me off:
You cannot chamber a round if the grip safety isn't depressed. I did not like that. I don't really like the grip safety on the 1911. I thought it was broke for a moment.

It had more muzzle flip than I expected. Maybe the axis of the barrel is high.

My group was tight. The two 20 year olds were all over the place. I think they were better shots with my Glock 21 .45 acp. What the ...?

I'm going to see if other bran magazines function in it.

My xd-40 has an unusual amount of muzzle flip, mostly I think it is due to the high center of mass, as the entire top is a big chunk of steel, and the rest is plastic. The grip safety on these is a love hate relationship, but it will grow on you. Great purchase, glad to hear you got one, now all we need is a few pics :) LOL

Just suck it up and buy a SIG-SAUER, you won't regret it. A SIG P226 in .40S&W is an awesome weapon, and a barrel swap will convert it to shoot the 357 SIG caliber which is basically a super-hot 9mm. Glocks and XDs are inferior, thats why the FBI and other elite law enforcement units, as well as wise civilians don't buy plastic framed pistols with lame design features like 'trigger safetys. Hold them in your hand and know the truth, this gun was designed for 30,000+ rounds under hellish conditions.

I would choose the Glock, I've owned a 17, and now a 23.
But I am a recent convert too the Beretta 92 FS, and with the 96 G upper, I can convert too the .40 S&W if the need is required.
Try too concider how you will use the weapon, and concider ammo availability.
Example:
Military standard issue for a sidearm is in 9mm, SpecOps units sometimes carry .45 ACP
Law enforcement will carry 9mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP.
In my area Boarder Patrol uses .40 S&W, as do the local Law enforcement.
However, some do use 9mm also.
Just something to think about.
FYI
I liked my Glock 17 better then my 23
