ok im looking to buy my first shot gun primarry use would be home deffence but at the same time i want to be able to put a choke in and hunt small game such as water fowl and squirles. one of my buddys said i really needed to get the 870 espress combo so i would be able to hunt mall game and deer wit hthe rifled barell. i like the thought of the combo but at the same time if i was to get into deer huntig it would have a dedicated weapon for that perpous.

Remington, Winchester, Mossberg, it doesn't matter, get a gun that fits you and then shoot it a lot till it becomes a part of you. I use the same IM choke and #4 shot for turkey hunting as I do for home defense. By adding a rifle sight with a high viz front sight I now have a 100 yard deer gun using standard Foster or Brenneke slugs. Semi or pump is your choice, just make sure you know how to disassemble and clean your gun regularly and you will be good to go. I have both 20 and 12 gauges for the purpose but most of the time I just grab my 20 as enough gun. Deer and turkey can't seem to tell the difference and at in house distances in a bump in the night scenario the boogerman won't appreciate the difference either. Get what you are comfortable with.

You can't go wrong with the 870. Keep in mind you don't need the rifled barrel to go deer hunting, as a smooth bore will still shoot slugs with precision, but it is nice to have two barrel lengths for their intended purposes.
The Mossberg 500 is a nice shotgun and I owned one for HD purposes for quite sometime. But at the end of the day I just like the feel of the 870 over the 500.

hillbilly, im in the market for a first shotgun as well, I mainly want one for HD but I would like to have the ability to shoot skeet, I was looking at this exact model.
However right now at Buds they have the 870 express 12ga synthetic with an 18 in barrel for 320. thats a great price, I think the combo is about 500? be curious to know what your decision is?

Another vote here for the 870 Express. As the first gun in establishing a survival battery, it is without peer. I have other shotguns that are my first choice for specific tasks, but the 870 is a reasonable 2nd choice for everything. Better after-market support for parts and accessories also help to make this gun hard to do without in a well planned aquisition strategy.
