FBI Purchases 20mm Rifles with suppressors

Wyn Boniface was quick off the mark in spotting a pre-solicitation request from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the purchase of two Anzio Ironworks 20mm magazine fed rifles (cannons) with suppressors.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) intends to award a non-competitive, sole source purchase order to Anzio Ironworks Corporation, 1905 16th Street N, St. Petersburg, FL 33704 for two (2) Magfed 20mm Rifles and accessories in accordance with FAR 6.302-1, only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements.

The FBI intends to procure the following items:

Magfed 20mm Rifle with Belgian Camo Overcoat finish. Includes bipod, brake, handguard, free floated barrel and case (Qty: 1 each)

Magfed 20mm Rifle with Navy NWV Camo Duracoat finish. Includes bipod, brake, handguard, free floated barrel and case (Qty: 1 each)

Non-firing bolt assemblies (Qty: 2 each)

Extra magazines (Qty: 4 each)

Suppressors in 20mm (Qty: 2 each)
The solicitation number is 10-Q-LDQ002768.

Anzio's rifles are chambered for the 20x102mm Vulcan cartridge. When loaded with a non-explosize 1543 grain projectile the round can achieve 3395 fps, generating 39500 ft/lbs of muzzle energy (compared to 14,000 ft/lbs of the .50 BMG).

At longer ranges the relatively poor ballistic coefficient of these large rounds will cause a significant decrease in energy but when used with high explosive ammunition this is not a problem as the on-target kinetic energy is less important than the chemical energy contained in the warhead.

It would be at the very least interesting to find out what these rifles will be used for. With just two rifles being purchased they might be destined to just training and / or evaluating the usefulness of this class of weapon.

I looked this up after thumbing through a copy of th mall ninja rag Tactical Weapons. if anyone is interested I can transcribe excerpts.

doesn't look like they ordered any according to invoice. may have req'ed some from a DoD supply. I'm gonna take a few pics from the magazines- the article is very limiting on any details about the FBI purchases or implementation- its mainly a review of the hardware itself after a VERY brief history of the Bureau.

Tactical Weapons said:
Threats to American Peace and security have grown exponentially since the gangster years, and so have threats to individual federal agents who investigate and enforce laws enacted to prevent or neutralize such threats.
The tools and technology fielded by the FBI in this war on crime have tended to keep pace with those direct threats. Now the simple [sic] war on crime has morphed into the Global War on Terrorism, which has upped the ante considerably. In light of of this, what the bureau does not have on line, it must at least have a working familiarity with.

Available technology and weaponry need to be known and agents trained in their use, if they are to be available for the appropriate mission. Reaction to any imminent threat may need to be nimble, to be effective.

Big Bore Blasters go to Quantico

Scenarios where the FBI may need to respond to-or stand off-an active threat would logically include very long ranges, and the target requiring service may include a vehicle or vessel, or other transport or device purpose-built by terrorists and/or criminals. Recent purchases (as in more than one- DW) by the bureau for delivery to the school at Quantico would indicate that plans include thinking outside the Remington bolt-action box, for mission requirements exponentially more serious than could be handled by the .338 Lapua or even a .50BMG (12.7x99mm) Raufoss round.

That is very interesting to say the least as you would expect the military elite or CIA to purchase items like this if true; not the FBI. It even has a nice looking compact scope on top. May be its even thermal imaging?
Love to give one a whirl sighting a basket ball target at a ½ mile for a starter, then go the full mile next.

Don't forget that there are many FBI and CIA operatives assigned in combat zones. Some are in actual combat roles. They carry out special-forces type missions, and a peice of equipment like this 20mm rifle is a VERY specialized instrument. Like "sniping" an aircraft that contained a high-value target, or shooting at groups of people in hostile terrain where an aircraft is not feasible.

those were just the first 2 in that 1st purchase that went right to Quantico for training, theres been more since then.

Anti materiel is fine- but the .50BMG has done a bang up job at that already.

And why would the Feds be called overseas into anything but an investigative role?

"Better to have it and not need it than......" Must be some forum readers at the Bureau.

They must have picked up some credible intel that the BG's got ahold of some 19X101 devices. Given the choice of this being in the hands of LEO or military for domestic use I would choose LEO everytime. I don't like continuing the precedent of military use for domestic suppression whether it's the Whiskey Rebellion, the GAR veterans, WW I veterans, real or imagined terrorism, or urban race riots. Another view of Separation of Powers.
