Hi All,

I'm a gear junkie. 511 tactical, LA Police Gear-you name it, I like it. What I don't like, however, is some of the absurd pricing they have on their merch. 511 is one of my favorite companies to shop but i cant justify 50 bucks or more on their belts that are made in Cambodia:

Ares Gear makes a fantastic belt:

but a 4 week wait and an 80 dollar price tag is discouraging.

So I made my own.

My buckle is not as nice as the Ares Gear Buckle, but it was a fraction of the price of those 20 dollar cobra buckles. I used 1.5 inch wide scuba webbing for the belt construction. Using black carpet thread, I doubled up the webbing and stitched a long strip of kydex in between the layers to make it rigid. I used 1inch OD green webbing for the buckle strap and Velcro to secure the adjustment end. This belt is solid as hell, and I put a concealed pocket on the belt that rides just below the small of my back that holds a handcuff key. That way if I get handcuffed by someone outside of law enforcement (or unlawful law enforcement) I can release myself.

My reasoning was, if you were handcuffed with your hands behind your back you can reach for the key no problem just the way you are. If your hands were cuffed in front of you, all you need to do is pull your belt out and get the key that way.

A concern of mine as well. Hopefully the Perp would only try to disarm us and not undress us:confused: The OD green I put into this belt might make it a little higher profile than I envisioned before making it, but it shouldn't be a problem because I hardly ever tuck in my shirt.

Does anybody want a belt?

Looks better that some I wore in the past and spent good money on. I like it.

old cop handcuff key trick. i always tied a handcuff key on some light monofiliment line. when i put it on my rear center belt loop and dropped inside pants it was always availible if i needed to get out of cuffs in bad situation perps use cuffs or such mine get used on me etc. i always used the heavier military police cuff key that was heavier built than standard key. so it would stay in position better. it's gtg insurance.

The fact is it would be cheaper to buy one of those fancy expensive rigger belts.

While the OP saved a lot of money by only paying for materials he put a LOT of skill and labor into his work. That kind of skilled custom work would run you some real money.

His selling price should be ((materials plus overhead plus several hundred a day profit) / (how many he can make in a day)) plus shipping. So if he's making only 2-3 a day then those belts would only be a viable product to sell if he was charging over $100 a pop.

There is a reason that Cambodian made gear still sells for $75. They know a custom maker in the US cannot beat that price and stay in business.

If you really want to look slick, there are some cool looking handcuff keys that conceal in a pen case. I thought about buying one recently. Uzi tactical has a couple models on the market right now. the belt is totally solid looking, with the kydex I may have to try and make a thinner version with some pockets for other lock tools and a knife sheath at the back of the belt buckle.

I like that one, it's not meant to be any type of load bearing belt, but being double layer of nylon, I bet it's really stiff ... Is the buckle metal or plastic?

I have a couple of riggers' belts that the tail doubles back thru the buckly, the velcro sticks while trying to thread it through the belt loops, plus the tail of the belt gets in the way of my holster.
