So I was just diagnosed with Diabetes. Joy.

The doctor says I still have a chance of just adjusting my diet and losing 50lbs that I could come off the meds and continue as before.

What are the complications this brings to the table for prepping/survival needs?

I see you did you read "One Second After"? I suggest you follow the doctors advice. Also, I have started testing a product out there that is supposed to help with this. I don't know if it is working yet, just been trying it for two weeks:

http://www.synergyworldwide.com/

And Nope, I'm not selling it, just trying it out to see if it does anything but they make a lot of claims........

I think it is more what you can do now. If you manage to come down in weight and start on a diet that is easier on your body, your insulin might well cover your body's needs, maybe for quite a long time. Exercise is a big thing since it makes your body more sensitive to insulin, says I who hate exercising... I'm just speculating here, but because of a natural tendency to put on weight that comes with diabetes, maybe you will outlive a few in famine.

should be no concern if you start eating right and taking care of yourself.

stop eating lots of carbs(breads, pastas) if you do eat make sure whole grain. bleached enriched products help cause diabetes.

no soda of any kind.
no sugar or sugar sub of any kind. the sugar subs cause diabetes 70% of time
eat predominately raw diet will help
greens reduce the effects of sugar on body. green smoothies are wonderful
chia seeds are wonderful for body, the secretion of the seeds coats sugars and carbs to make them release about 30% slower.
Victoria Boutenko is a good person to listen too. kids and whole family had problems husband told we would die without surgery. they went raw diet and health as anyone can be. kids diabetic # were never under 200. after eating raw fruit for 1 night numbers were close to normal

Despite what you have heard, there is a cure to diabetes and it is all in the diet. The type 2 diabetes is usually induced by diet, but many factors can add into. Type 1, is curable, though no scumbag media wants to admit it. There is literature out there. My grandfather was diagnosed with diabetes and because he changed his diet, he does not have it anymore. He didn't even lose that much weight because he was diagnosed when he was older and had knee issues, so he wasn't that mobile. I would say for your health's sake, follow a diet that your doctor recommends and start working out (if your doctor allows it). There have been studies that show that walking 1 hour a day, without dieting, can show results in loss of weight.

Know that you should both maintain a good diet and do some sort of exercise that your doctor recommends. At least get out and walk for an hour. Studies and from my personal experience have shown that to keep weight off, and improve long-term health, your life style needs to be changed for at least 6 months. People with diabetes usually live significantly less. In Slovakia, where I am currently residing, there are a somewhat abundant number of older people who have diabetes. I have seen a lot of amputees. A lot of older guys, who are 55 or 60 (which isn't that old these days) do not have legs, teeth and have a hard time thinking or speaking. This is a result of advanced diabetes. I am trying to scare you, but this is also very real. I am not trying to hurt your feelings, but this is something very serious and I sympathize with you because I have seen it hurt a lot of people.

The main reason of type 2 diabetes is because the constant spikes in blood sugar levels. For example, if you wake up in the morning and drink a soda or two, then don't eat til lunch (when the b/s level has dropped) then when you eat, your blood sugar level will spike again. This is why people constantly rush and crash from the influx of energy from foods. This is also why people say it is best to eat smaller portions more often than fewer large portions.

When losing weight also consider losing weight in blocks. First try to lose 10 lbs, then when you have reached that goal, set another goal until you ultimately reach the goal you want. Note that it will be frustrating and will take time, but when you reach your goal you will feel like you have greatly rewarded yourself.

Where is this literature on the curing of Type 1 diabetes. Please show me the way as I have a cousin who has it and he is a young boy. Maybe we can help him. Thanks in advance.

Please go to bodybuilding.com. They have a TREMENDOUS resource for information on fixing your diet and adding an exercise program that is right for you. Instead of going to the "Store", click on "SuperSite." I'm currently entered in their 90-day contest to win $25,000, lose weight, and get fit.

When my BS hit the magic number the Dr wanted to put me on meds. Tried one pill and it made my blood sugar drop like a rock and I had all kinds of hypoglycemic problems. Stopped taking the pills and went on the South Beach Diet the next day. Lost 25 lbs, my BS/A1C is now in normal ranges. I changed the way I eat....I don't eat anything white other than fat free 1/2 and 1/2 in my coffee, cottage cheese and yogurt. No white means no sugar, no salt, no white flour, no ice cream, no white rice, no white potatoes, no pasta (it's not white, but it's made from white flour). I will occasionally eat whole grain/whole wheat bread (actually low carb wraps), brown rice, sweet potatoes and oatmeal. Otherwise I stick with a low carb diet. Besides dropping my A1C and BS my LDL cholesterol has dropped too. Add in some moderate exercise by walking a couple miles every other day and there's no meds for me.

The lack of "white" food might sound boring but if I slip and eat something with sugar, white flour, white potatoes, etc. I really feel like crap. I'd rather feel good than pig out on chips, bread and pasta.

Horse Hockey.

You have Type II, which can go away if you get out and loose some weight. eat right and everything in moderation.

My daughter is Type I, that means she is insulin dependent and she will die without daily doses of insulin from her pump. Her pancreas was damaged by what doctors now believe to be a virus.

Currently there is NO cure for Type I. which is what the girl had in one second after.
as soon as the wife and I found out our daughter was Type I we started putting up insulin and test strips, we now have 26 months in reserve.

get your diet in check, loose the weight and keep a schedule to keep it off. There is no magic cure, there is no proven diet for Type II, there is only what works for you.

Dont buy the pills, or the other crap that people will sell you on this.

Good luck to you and if I can help you please feel free to PM me.

Getting better from type 2 can depend, some people just have an easier time. If you have a hard time, don't give up. My mom used to eat fairly healthy and exercise a lot and still got diabetes. She didn't notice herself, only that she peed much. The doc found it. He was very insistent that she should try without meds before getting any, so she only took what she really needed. She changed her diet from good to better (some may disapprove she still eats natural yoghurt with cinnamon and ginger and you are not supposed to eat yoghurt).

Then she eats by color, meaning you only get a small amount of yellow food (Few potatoes, a little wholegrain pasta or bread), then the rest has to be other colors. For instance carrot, bell peppers, tomatoes, blueberries, lettuce. And, her glucose is perfect. At the beginning I could kind of tell things weren't right, but now she's not running to the bathroom all the time.... Feel like I'm spying on her.

In SHTF, I have a feeling we'll all be getting lots more exercise. We won't be eating junk food either.
Eat foods high in chromium. Cinnamon is good to even out blood sugars.
Eating smaller amounts but more often eliminates much of the blood sugar spikes. Don't eat just one or two heavy meals...space it out so you have something to eat every couple of hours.
Most type IIs will do fine in SHTF.

I got the genetic cluster-f that makes getting type II very, very easy (both parents, two grandparents, a bunch of great-grands... my mom and dad weren't joking when they said they were perfect for each other...) so I feel the OP's pain to some extent.

Don't mess around changing up things to get those 50 lbs off. Do it now, while you can do it in a steady and comfortable-ish way, and not SHTF time.

I have my weight within BMI but the doc still warns me to be careful. He'd like me to lose even more, but I am very mesomorphic.

This is something that you can beat with diet and exercise. You can do it. Don't let it beat you.

I am a lot better than I was when I was first given the come-to-Jesus by my doctor. He'd told me flat out to get it in gear or look forward to going down my dad's road, and I do NOT want to do that. I want to be able to take care of my family, not be somebody for them to take care of.

I do prep with it in mind even though I am not actually diabetic I have such a likelihood.

I have to say, seeing 2 grandparents die of it (one with a mother who lost both her legs to it) and my parents struggle with it and the crap it does to your vision and heart and circulation, it scared me straight. You don't wanna play with it.

PM me if you wanna swap ideas on preps and stuff for it.

Please take care of yourself, whatever you do. Watching my dad (a survivalist) deal with this crud is hell. It really can erode you. I would love to be able to help somebody else avoid this crap.

when SHTF and you have exausted your supply of diabetes medication. Identify the biggest dadelions you can find. Dig up the roots. Wash out the roots and sun dry for 3 days. Boil 1 root in water for 10 minutes. Chop up one boiled root into small pieces. Chew a root slowly till its gone. Then start chewing on another root pieces till all the root is gone. Do not drink any liquid while during or after the chewing as it will dilute the dandelion root medicine.. Eat one root a day for 30 days. You also have to maintain a strict diabetes diet.. No carbohydrates during the root cure. Also no proteins to give your kidneys a rest. This cure will work on insulin dependent (needle injected) and non-insulin dependent diabetics. Dandelion root stimulates the pancreas to make more insulin.

A few years ago while taking some courses I did 2 papers on diabetes for my class. Later my aging mother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I explained it to her, took her to the clinics, translated the "doctor talk" to her, but she hasn't changed her way of life since the first scare...eats crap and drinks Pepsi every day. We saw my DH's son-in-law die from diabetes (after losing both legs) leaving 3 sons behind (who, I am sad to say, eat the same way their father did). I do not expect my mother to live past the next 5 years... :(

Two friends of mine were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes years ago and went on a life-change plan; they both lost weight and within 3 months there was no trace of diabetes AT ALL. Type 2 is certainly controllable, if not curable.

I am not familiar with any way type 1 is 'curable'.

Start now to get healthier, and when TSHTF it will be one less thing you'll need to concern yourself about.
