I dunno I have seen some obtusly large knives it depends what he is labeling a survival knife. the troop leader did not say he couldnt have a knife just not take one over 5.5 in long or if he does keep it out of sight

Remember if it is in your backpack it isn't a concealed weapon.

Far too many troops can't afford the group liability insurance for having knives carried by everybody.

Unfortunately far too many city/county regulations have superseded the Boy Scout Manual...Just like the 33rd Annual The New York City Custom Knife Show is moving to New Jersey because of the hassles of New York City's (not state) knife regulations.

thanks for the information. there probibly woudn't be a problem with my knife in the troop except that one parent I mentioned earlier. its not are scout master it's that one parent who's the problem. although the bag I will probibly carry the knife in is not a back pack it is a sholder bag like a satchel I wear in my belt and I wear the strap over my sholder. I still have to open it up and take it out so hopefully it will count
once I brought a small radeo on a camp out and I turned it on and tried lisen to it and that guy said turn that off no electronics. and later that camping trip he had is 4G i phone out and was watching TV in the midle of camp! not just for his self he was inviting other people over to watch it with him.

if its just some parent/ chaperone id tell em to **** off if your carrying it and its not illegal and your scout master allows it you should/can take it ask your parents and your scout master if you get there permission you can tell everyone else to fly a kite but i would recomend getting a smaller knife

A folder might be a good option. It can accomplish your day to day tasks just fine. Unless you are going to be chopping, splitting, or hacking off tree limbs you dont really need anything over 4 inches. If you are only using it for emergencies, just throw it in the bottom of your pack and nobody will know/care. Carry something that looks more like a woods or utility knife. Dont bring some wicked looking tacticool knife....

According to the law that someone referenced earlier, yes it is legal to go over the length limit if you are camping, hunting, hiking, ect. or going from the woods to home or from home to the woods but you cant carry it in a city or anything if you have no reason to do so.

I have no idea if its illegal or legal to conceal the knife though. I also have no idea if it being in a backpack counts as being concealed (this is something I have wondered for a very long time and have not gotten an answer).

I would research this thoroughly and be sure without a doubt that you're ok before doing it. Some law enforcement officers don't know the law and might arrest you because they think you are breaking that law even if you aren't(Yes they can and will). Then you're looking at a legal headache that may haunt you for years if the judge is having a bad day when you go to court. Our justice system is far from perfect.

I err on the side of caution even if I have the right to do something. I don't feel it's right, but I do what keeps me out of trouble. I wish I had endless time and money to fight this type of problem, but I don't.
