A hair straightener is my favorite method of sealing mylar. I get better results with it than I did using a clothing iron. It shouldn't matter if it's used as long as there isn't any kind of sticky buildup or anything on the plates. But you can buy them brand new locally for $10-15 or so.

Agreed, I have one I got at walmart for around $18.

 

I used my iron set on the highest temp and had no problem at all with sealing my bags. Wonder if it makes a difference what kind of iron you have. I have a Rowenta.

Any of them will do, no need for anything fancy AT ALL except maybe a teflon type coating. Big Lots and Wongmart have cheap ones.

Wallyword sells a Revlon flat iron for just under $10.

Two heat settings and worked great on Mylar bags on both settings, but I use it on high for added piece of mind.

 

I use our clothes iron with a 1"x2" wood slat, with a piece of parchment paper to keep the iron from sticking to the mylar. I check my buckets every six months and you can see the seal is intact.

 

I tried to use a sealer on Mylar at first, but it didn't work very good. Then I had the bright idea to use the wife's straightener on it and it worked great until she got home. Apperantly she paid 200 bucks for it and I ruined them...oops. On the bright side I now have an awesome Mylar bag sealer...lol

Most of the straighteners at wallymart are under 400F and the manufacturer recommended 425F. There are only a few that are 425F but all > $25 brand new. I can only find used ones for $10-15.

So even if the temp is 400F or under, it will still work?

What would you do if you were me? Purchase a new one for $10-15 that is under < 400F or purchase a used one that is 425F.
(By the way the seller said she never used it so it should be in good condition)

Yuck a used hair straighter to seal my long term food storage...not me!

 

if it looks unused, why not? if not, just head to the store and pick one up... I would make shure to get one that gets at least as hot as the mylar manufacture reccomends

 

Check your thrift stores I routinely see the irons at mine for less than $5.

 

Picked one up at Goodwill today for $2.99...heat setting go up to 395 degrees.

Time to go get some more 50 lbs bags of rice, and some wheat berries...can't wait to try it this way...have always used the clothes iron in the past. It worked, just was a little awkward. Looking at this, I can see how this will be much easier to purge excess air.

 

My mylar bag is very thick 7.5 mils and recommended 425F. This hair straightener has high heat 430F.

Would this hair straightener work to seal my 7.5 mil Mylar bags?

The one I got from wallyworld for under $10 is listed as being 375deg.

I honestly have not put a temp probe on it to see if that's the actual temp, however I first tried it out on the low setting and sealed a bag with air and water inside. I could force neither out of the seal I made on the low setting, so I was perfectly satisfied with its performance.
