Hi, long time lurker here. I've read lots of gear reviews on this site, but haven't really had much useful to contribute.

I know that not everyone here loves Bear Grylls and Man vs Wild, but my seven-year-old son loves to watch the show. He's been bugging me for a while wanting to try it out and go camping in the real wilderness (not a campground or car-camping), so we took an overnight trip a few miles into the woods and made this video. Much like the show, it's mostly just for entertainment, but does contain some actual advice. Check it out:

My respect for you, comrade.

Parenting is more than just pay bills and manteinance. You have made that your child feels capable and fulfill a little dream that suggests that, when your child grows, will be a nature lover and a free man. You have reason to feel very satisfied, and your son is lucky to have a father who accompanies and support him in achieving his dreams.

From Spain I am sending you a sincere handshake, and remember: These moments with your child are priceless, and your son will never forget them, both will be able to treasure in the memory these lovely experiences, they are what give life meaning :thumb:

That was awesome, where did you guys film this? My parents live in Livingston Tx and just curious how close you were. I wish there was more public land in Texas where you can go out from people like this. I like ManvsWild, I find it way more entertaining than educational but even though some don't like him, his show has spawned and inspired a lot of people who would otherwise sit at home on their couch. You gave me a few ideas of a video I'm going to attemt here in a couple of weeks up in the mountians of Southren Utah. Keep up the good work.

I use to camp up that way with my parents back in the late 70's and 80's. We camped at Wolf Creek when it was still wooded and no houses. I grew up in North Houston (Little York and I-45) and moved away in 1991 and never looked back. I've been gone from Texas (except for a visit every year or so) the last 20 years and miss this part of Texas. I'm really thinking about returning home after I retire in the next year or the year after (1st retirement, I hit 20 years active duty Air Force Sept 4 and will go over a little) but I have job opportunities here to make bank so I haven't decided yet. My video will be more like Survivor Man, sorta but really cheesy and dumb:D: as that's the meaning, I know how to camp but outdoor minimalist surviving not so much and I'm gonna try and make it somewhat funny if I can.

I don't understand. I thought he was a Bear Grylls fan.
Shouldn't he have been walking through the woods with a pointed stick to his eye to keep his direction or jumped head first into the dry creek bed to listen for underground splashes?

Teasing aside, that was good show.
Gotta give you both some points for the work in editing.
Ethan's a good guy.

Very cool. Brings me back to the days of being a cub scout.

I know it was a "get out on your own" type video mimicking a popular yet unrealistic tv show, perhaps you could make another video on what you should actually do if you were a kid in the forest with your parents and lost your way. More focus on staying put & signaling, making your presence known, perhaps making/disinfecting water? We all know what doing some of the things shown on tv could do in real life (like jumping 30 feet into water of unknown depth) and it would be refreshing to see him take the lead on realistic survival and be an inspiration to his peers...or at least get him to be more like les stroud :D:
