Heading over to pick up my new get outta dodge alive rifle tomorrow and wonder what you folks have in way of suggestions for an optic.
The rifle is the Henry Arms AR-7 22lr. It has marginal iron sites but I feel like it would improve round on target when going for small game by taking advantage of the rail on the top. So any offerings or ideas, please feel free to share and explain the why. :)

Regardless of what you choose, you're going to have to deal with the takedown feature.

The barrel itself never quite returns to zero. Therefore the sight itself will never be quite right when installed and reinstalled.

So with that in mind, I would suggest a 2-4moa red dot sight.
The impact should always be under the dot at Amy reasonable range.

I'm used to shooting with red dot (CCO/M68) as well as ACOGs so I'm tempted to lean that way. The tighten to clicks mount on most modern AR style optics would seem a good way to mount it with easy on/off while keeping most its zero. I'll have to devise some sort of protected carry pouch type thing to hold it when the rifle is "stored" but I don't think that will be to hard.
keep up the feedback guys... I appreciate it. :)

Lol. I don't mind his feedback, even if it isn't really relevant. :) maybe to clarify, this is a food gathering, easy to pack weapon of covinence. Not a defensive/ primary firearm. I'm running 5.56 for the protection primary with a SA XD in 45 for back up. This is to throw in the BOB and come out when I need small game etc and either don't want to tap into the precious protection ammo or am concerned to loud a shot will bring unwanted attention.

I have a couple of these AR-7s from Henry but really only for the fun factor with my kiddos and the occasional kayak trip down the Brazos when it's not dry. But, I have a BSA 30mm Red-Dot bought for about $50 that Ive used on several Tac rimfire rifles that'd probably work for you without busting the bank.

This amazon listing appears to be a newer version than what I have, and cheaper in cost too.. :xeye:
But if it works...

If it were me with that rifle I wouldn't put a optic on it,spend your money on a quality peep sight, for the yardages you will be shooting with that gun the peep sight will be as accurate as you will ever need,I would first mount a scope that I already own and shoot several types of ammo to find what the gun likes then take it off and put your peep sight on.

For some reason most people don't consider it as an option but the rossi 22 20ga combo is my preferred breakdown rifle. The sight picture is great on the 22 with fiber optic sights and with the 20ga barrel I can take anything from birds to large game. And the breakdown takes less than a minute to swap barrels.

This is the optic that I use with my Henry:

This is the result at 35 yards:

I don't want any optic on my Henry because, then you can't stow the rifle any more. If I can't stow the rifle any more then I might as well carry my 10-22.

two good scopes for you're .22 depending on what you want, the fixed power is more compact the variable is well variable.... personal choice sort of thing as there can be arguments either way.... personally i like having a magnified scope on my .22's .... it's not always about distance, sometimes it's about the size of the target, or a combination of both size of target and distance... or maybe i just suck...lol, i don't know tough to tell from some of the responses i'm seeing here.

I would call my cz 452 scout the closest I got. It's main purpose and what i told the wife is its for the daughter to learn to shoot a .22 and hunt with. It would make a good bug out type small game getter. I just put a recoil pad on the back of it for length of pull adjustment. The cz is darn accurate too, and the open sights are pretty decent. I got this a while ago for about $220.
