Best western - Rio Bravo

Best War - They Were Expendable

Best Character - Capt. Nathan Brittles, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

The best John Wayne movie? You mean to say, there's one that wasn't excellent?

But just for the fun of naming a name, I see no-one has mentioned 'The Shootist' yet. Maybe because it has such a downbeat ending, but you'll have to agree, it was still a good movie.

His early movies were not always all that good. And some of them (like when he played a G-Man going after commies, filmed during the McNamara era) were just plain bad.

I was with the 5th SF GP ABN in Vietnam when this movie came out (my second year) and there had been a write up in the home town paper about me serving with 5th group about 6 months earlier. Wel when it started showing I had about 6 young females from my home town write me and tell me they saw me in the movie. InterestIng it was filmed in Gerorgia. Needles to say my next leave home wHen I extended again was very well intertaining.:

 

Red River, was a good film as well.

I do like the John Ford cavalry trilogy. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon/Fort Apache/Rio Grande.

I spent many a glorious afternoon watching these old films as a youngster, with my Grandfather.

Ony one, probably couldn't say... In Harm's Way, or The Undefeated, or Chisum...

In the Fighting Seebees, he does't get the girl and dies at the end.

Best Western not named Searchers - Angel and the bad man

Best Non Western - The quiet man, The scene where he drags Maureen O'Hara across the country side is priceless

Best Comedy - McClintock. Again the scene with Maureen O'Hara is priceless

The one movie I can't watch without getting teary eyed - She wore a yellow ribbon. The part where the colonels wife and the colonel himself are crying, while is daughter is leaning on a post gets me every time.

Colonel - You better not be crying either.
Daughter - I 'm not crying, in fact I feel like standing up and cheering.

best supporting role movie - The longest day.

So many wonderful ones to choose from! How could I choose just one?

But since you insist, I'm forced to say “Rio Grande”. John Wayne played such a wealth of emotions in that movie and the depth of intertwined story lines and characters were superb.

 

I always had a liking for The Sons of Katie Elder, as well.

Another Duke classic.

The Shootist, his last, was probably the best done JW movie.

I liked Big Jake, The Cowboys and to a lesser degree McClintock. Who shot Liberty Valance is another good one. He was a better actor as he got older, more nuance and polish.

 

I liked True Grit.
