I was wondering what is the best and cheapest way to clean the exterior of a firearm after lubricating / greasing ? Any re-usable or disposable rag reccomended ?

I use flannel and yes I reuse it. I fold it up and put it in a zip lock bag

I use the flannel because it's soft and won't scratch fine finishes. I can use anything, even a paper towel works....but it might scratch.

I keep the rag just lightly coated with oil. I put a couple of drops on it before I put it back into it's baggy

I live down here by the coast, I keep a light coat on all my guns. I'll go over them once or twice a year and depending on use.

I use a light coat of Ballistol. Just be careful if it is an ornate/plated firearm, maybe use something a little weaker that will still protect it.

I take my mosin-nagant out every few months, wet a cleaning patch with ballistol, and rub a light coat on all the metal.

I am curious though as to why you say clean AFTER lube/greasing? If you have used any decent lube on the exterior it should act as a corrosion protector. If you mean you lube the internals, and want something for the exterior, then either your lube that you used can be lightly applied to the exterior or something like a cheap silicone-infused cloth can work great to wipe down the firearm for storage.

I wear a lot of white cotton shirts, when they get old I tear them up for gun rags. I cut the stitching out and remove all logos or designs because they will scratch up a finish. I use a very light coat of synthetic oil on a new rag to wipe the guns down after cleaning or twice a year if I have not shot them.
The white shirts really tell you how much gunk is coming off, and when that part is clean.

I use old T-shirts and Breakfree CLP. Spray on the Breakfree and wipe most of it off.

Honestly, the only reason I was worried was that my Ivar Johnson MOD 55 kept rusting over the past year and I couldnt figure out if it was from insufficient rag material or that my Otters lubrication just sucked.

By the way has anyone seen this, Im considering using RIG for the outside of the firearms ... http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=12616/guntechdetail/Gun_Cleaning_Clinic__Knowing_the_Limits_of_Rust_Preventatives
