So a morning walk to the super market ended in rage. I decided to get some eggs, hazelnut coffee creamer, and bagels to start what I though was going to be a good day.

I'm approached by a dirty woman smoking a black and mild cigar asking if I want to buy $200 worth of food stamps for $100. I said no. So she explained I can put stuff in cart up to $200 and she would pay for it and I just need to give her $50 outside.

So now I'm upset. I said ok I'll bite.

I go back in and start shopping for meat, produce, anything that will go bad in a few hours if not stored properly.

I give her the cart and wait outside.

She comes out with a nod and smile and says ok this will be $50.

I said well my dear, take this cart home and feed your kids. I'm not giving you a dime after paying for this already through my taxes. Have a good a day!

Her rage was through the roof, but so what?

I thought I did the right thing. LOL

This crap plays out over and over again. I have neighbors who recieve $600 a month on a EBT card. Every month the "spend" it all in a week or two. Do they go hungery? Do they get a job to pay for food? No. They drive to the food bank, and get a cart full of groceries for free. I will NEVER donate a penny to food charity in the US. Same goes for toy donation programs. Last year my mother in law showed up with "extra" toys for my kids. She then explained how she applied for free toys, and we should do it to. I was disgusted. Sure she was "unfortunate", after buying 4 cartons of smokes, a bag of weed, and making a payment on her 2013 car. 99% of the people who use these programs are human waste that take anything they can get for free.

oh how your opinion would change if you were ever in need.\\i have no doubt there is abuse in the system. just as there is no doubt many in the system not only NEED it, but are thankfull for it and dont want assistance for any longer than they absokutely must have it.

Those so precious 'mom and pop' stores that people rave about when complaining about Walmart too often do something Walmart won't do, they'll simply pay pennies on the dollar right off in bogus transactions with EBT and SNAP. Ask around, and you'll find out what stores in your area do it. If the welfare folks were really concerned about it, they'd spend the ten minutes and do an investigation and nail the businesses, but the ones working for the system are just as bad parasites themselves.

I beg to differ. Having run a food bank in Orlando for years, my gut feeling is that perhaps 1/4 of them abuse the system. I've fed women living with 3 kids in her car. I've paid out of my own pocket to have clothes cleaned. I've helped them get assistance when hospitals have referred them to me for malnutrition. I've kept lists of those needing specific help and have given items donated to me, sometimes 6 months later. When tears roll down a mother or father's face just b/c I took the time to help.....

However, if you are ever on the other side, and need help, give me a shout. I'll run that line by you and see if your need to stand up to scrutiny. YOU won't like the process I promise.

I remember a woman that my wife worked with during Isabel. They never lost power or anything including any tree's or limbs, yet her husband went and stood in line for assistance and got, i forgot exactly how much, hundreds of dollars in food assistance and other goodies just because he could... Not to mention the color involved ( i know i know but I have seen enough to be racist on some things) but i have seen enough , including working part time at a grocery store, because we needed the extra money to be very suspect in a lot of the cases..........
The one time we really needed assistance we were turned down because we made too much even though I was the only one working after my wife lost her job, We could not even get reduced cost school lunches for our daughter. The county told my wife "Well if you were single then you could get all kinds of things" that and the fact that we both felt we were the wrong skin color to have help offered to us.....
have soured us both on assistance for the majority of people out there........

I'm so sick of hearing/read all the sob stories and "you'd think different if you needed it" garbage. Maybe 99% of people aren't abusing the system like someone said, but damnit these people, the majority of them, are not on these systems because they have repeatedly made good choices!!!!! And I for one am sick and GD tired of paying for others people's laziness and ****-poor choices!!!!!!!!

Some of you folks are clueless.

I have dealt with the mentality the OP speaks of FIRST HAND MANY TIMES.

It is NOT an isolated thing. EBT card fraud is only a fracton of what's going on.
There's heating fuel credits fraud, utility payments fraud, Section 8 housing fraud.....and the list goes on. When I work in poor, rural areas, I can't count the number of times I've been awakened at 2am to have some crack "woman" asking if I want some 10 - 50 gallons of kerosene in exchange for cash and "fun" so she can go get a fix. This after I had worked under grueling conditions for 12 - 15 hours and was exhausted.

Noone here should be ashamed of being angry over the abuse. We are ALL paying for it and it's rampant.

And, let me tell you that the EBT card is the tiny tip of the iceberg.

Very few at this forum have dealt with these people first hand for any length of time. I have. The ways they find to abuse the system is just short of brilliant....but rather than use those brains to better themselves, it's a hell of a lot easier to feel pitiful and collect handouts....or outright cheat the system.

The number of able bodied men in poor, rural communities who are seen as "desirable" by local women is often based on the size of their disability check or welfare benefits. The whole town knows when someone scores a big government check. It's similar to when a war hero comes home. It's the pinnacle of their lives.

I have very little sympathy.

F4F- you said this fraud is just short of brilliant. The more angering thing is all those low-life instruction agencies telling people how to take advantage of the system! Then these parasites take it a step further selling these things for cash!!!
And what's even more screwed up is the fact that I have never heard commercials on the radio for food stamps until Obama was elected.

I was a cashier at walmart for a while and saw all kinds of crap involving ebt. Dirty hippies buying all the high dollar vegan stuff. I saw a mom and four kids come in and they each got a 20 oz soda and a small bag of chips for snack time. They always have two orders. One for the food with ebt and a second for beer and cigarettes with cash. Sometimes even a third with wic.

After 9/11, the company i worked for, which was an industrial tool company, downsized
meaning they let me go and kept the part timer who they did not provide insurance, vacation or anything else to anyway I got a job for the summer at General American Door Co.(GADCO) as warehouse supervisor. Every Monday morning we got in an 18 wheeler which had to be hand unloaded. The temp company they used provided people who were temps because they could not keep a real job.
Anyway there was a black guy who worked there, that would get these "bums" in the back of the trailer and basically give a class on how to play and scam the system. If you do this the state will give you this, if you apply for that in this way the fed will give you that,,,, He could not understand why I always used to get so ****ed with him. He lived in the projects. His son was killed by a shotgun blast while playing b/ball, he still would not move. He did not want a raise because then his rent would go up. AND here I was busting my butt with a mortgage, child, married and having just gotten this job.......
Sorry for the rant, but that kind of human scab I have no use for, break out the RAID and get rid of them like you would roaches..........

There is rampant abuse of EBT as well as all entitlement programs. I don't think any reasonable person would deny that as fact. And of course some folks DO absolutely need a helping hand, either temporarily or, in some cases, even permanently if they TRUELY can't take care of themselves. I think as a good, civilized society we have a moral obligation to help those who need it.

Of course it's not 99% abusing the system, and I really don't know if its 25%, 50%, 75%, but I think it's probably a very substantial percentage - abusing the system in one way or another. Some people just refuse to get off their lazy butts and work for a living when they know they can collect a free check. I read somewhere that a family on welfare, with EBT and free medical collects benefits that amount to more than many of us make working 40 hours plus per week. We know many of these people sell some of these "benefits", including EBT, and prescription drugs on the street on a monthly basis and make a lifelong career of working the broken system. And they've learned by years of experience that they can get away with it.

As long as there is lack of any real action to stop these abuses. it will continue to get worse. Unfortunately those who do use these programs for a temporary helping hand only when truely needed, or honestly CAN'T support themselves due to a true disability, pay the price of the stigma created by the leeches on society.
