Old Yeller

One fella mentioned the Texas Lacy Dog, and prior to just a couple of weeks ago, I'd never heard of it or it's fellow Cur breeds. The Cur dog is historically a great pioneer dog and ranch dog, of medium-to-large size, intelligent, fiercely loyal, and will die for its owner. They are bred to hunt wild hogs (no easy job) and to tree a variety of varmints. They are capable of hunting their own small game, and will hunt large game in packs. Though I have only just learned of this breed, they instantly moved to the top of my SHTF-dog list, as they have already been used as frontier dogs in the past. It is speculated that the novel Old Yeller by Fred Gipson was influenced heavily by his interaction with the Lacy boys who bred the Texas Lacy Dog, a Cur breed.

Great dog. That book and "Where the Red Fern grows" still bring tears to my eyes.

I'm thinking about a Malonois/lab mix. Could be an AWESOME dog.

Iv not heard of a king shepherd either, but that might be the American version of something.

A male dog humping a child isnt all that unusual. If you have a full male, then most things get humped at one point in time. Give them the snip and it should stop once the hormones calm down. My experience as a child was with our Lab, but it didnt put me of, infact Id get another of the breed.

I must admit, Iv been looking at German Shepherds, if and when we get another dog, but then I have had a GSD x Collie before, and not a beginner with dogs or their behaviour, plus had three rescue dogs. My current cairn x doesnt like other dogs much so it will be a few years before I can think of one, in the meantime Im doing my research.

I personally prefer an Akita. Very loyal breed that is very protective. When I was 6 years old, I was running around the forest near my grandparents house 24/7, and we had an Akita. It would follow me as I went miles into the forest, and always protected me. They were Japanese bred to hunt bears/tigers (according to which book you read) and protect children. Definitely the only breed I want in the wilderness.

I'd have to say one of the scariest dogs I've ever seen was a German Shepherd that weight about 240 pounds. It wasn't fat either. It was just HUGE. I never knew a dog like that could get that big and normally they don't, but this was a freak of nature. Imagine a pack of wild, 250 pound German Shepherds :0
And I would have to say BS. No offense but I work with working GSDs and Malinois, REAL WORKERS from Holland, Germany, Czech...etc. Even a fat ass lazy american bread shepherd would never way that much... Broken Scale? Or false information. Pictures? Probably not.

You're entitled to your opinion. I didn't start this thread to fight with people about a dog I saw 12 years ago. Of course I don't have pictures. I was 19 and not in the business of carrying a camera around to take pictures of things at a flea market. I assure you that I weighed 185 pounds at the time and the dog was easily quite a bit bigger than I was. I'm also not an idiot. I know what a German Shepherd looks like. Why would I lie about something like that? I already stated that it could have been lighter than 240. That's the weight the owner told me. I know for a fact that it weighed more than me though. Was it mixed with something? I don't know. Again, I didn't make that comment to start a fight with people. If you have nothing to actually add to the thread, don't post in it.

I've never considered what type of dog would be right for a survival situation, but I guess it would be dependant on the individual dog more than the particular breed. I'm going to go out on a limb and say we're talking about a wilderness survival situation rather than an urban "Katrina" situation? I am guessing that the dog would be used for hunting and as a security alarm. I have three dogs and believe I'd only choose the lab as help in a survival situation and not because of the breed but she as an individual dog has proven to be able to take care of herself and is always aiming to please. When I was in college, she'd sometimes go on her own adventures for a few days at a time only to show back up on the porch smelling to high heavens and tired. She is a great hunting dog, has 9 seasons as a duck hunter and has proven herself several times in the pheasant fields, on rabbit and will grab any animal that she can fit in her mouth and deliver it to hand. On top of that, she knows who the boss is and is extremely loyal. If they can't take care of themselves that leaves me taking care of two of us. I also have a pointer, he is an excellent hunting dog and if my situation calls for finding birds in wide open country then he's the dog I want with me. But, for day in day out walking around he would end up killing himself from exhaustion within a week, like I believe many of the breeds would that have been mentioned. High Ballin' hunting dogs just aren't wired to chill out and follow, they'll run themselves into the ground. My other dog is a Great Dane/Pit/Boxer/fence jumper? of some sort and if he were a little bit older I think he'd make an excellent dog to have along with one exception, he has very short/light hair and would not do well in cold weather. I don't think his nose is powerfull enough to even smell his own ass, but he is gritty enough to make a good hunting dog, he's strong as an ox and is a very good swimmer. Although he tends to like everyone he meets, he is a large intimidating dog and has a powerful bark that gives people pause in approaching him. Most people think he's a pit from a distance until they stand next to him or see him standing next to a pit and its pretty obvious since he towers over them. Down here and south of me, a lot of people use bully mixes for hog dogs as catch dogs....I don't know if he'd work out as one but there's strong indications he would.

The Dogo Argentino is a VERY good breed but is very little known about as its relatively new to the US, and is still primarily in the hands of dog show breeders and getting one usually involves about as much paperwork as adopting a child! But, my friend got one and turned it into a Hog dog. Was the best one we have ever used and that he has ever had! The breed was created in Agentina to hunt large game. If you want a barker though, don't bother with the Dogo, it was bred specifically to be quiet for stalking large game. I will be getting one as soon as I get back from this deployment :)

Very interesting. I had not heard of this specific breed of mastiff. I looked it up and it looks pretty interesting. Large dog! Stated the average weight was 80 to 100lbs! I looked locally in Texas and actually found a few being sold by families here. Maybe they're becoming more popular? Texas can always use hog dogs!
Definitely one to keep in mind.

it really depends on what SHTF

if its economic and your still working and can afford to feed a med-large dog would be good. of this size i like rottweilers

if you cant afford to feed a med-large dog or its more of a mad max scenario i would get a smoothe haired fox terrior. they are GREAT for hunting, they eat very little, they will attack intruders they are a VERY brave little dog afraid of nothing. :thumb:
