Being Away

As in being far from home if an EMP were to happen. And I mean a world wide EMP. I thought about this in regards to my son who is a Marine stationed in Japan. I thought about how he would get home if no electronics were working in order to get him home. Has anyone ever wondered about how they would return from say a vacation or business trip in a far away location? It makes you wonder. I do anyway.

Folks on active duty are likely to be kept on duty for the duration of the crisis. I expect the US Navy and the Marines will take care of their own. That does not mean you will have much contact, just assurance that they are busy and well fed.

The rest of us will have no assurances about public transport. If you are often traveling far from home, owning an older diesel pickup with extra tanks might be worth considering.

People who are far away when an EMP happens simply aren't getting home. That's the thing to expect, and the way to play it.

My daughter will be overseas for an extended period next year; I've already concluded that if an EMP or other major SHTF occurs while she's gone, I'll likely never see her again.

Even if she could get back to US shores, so what? I live in the midwest; she'd have to walk 1000-2000 miles to get home, she'd need food and water during that time, and there's just no way one can expect that to happen. I just have to hope she can make a go of it where she is.

I was just thinking of this over the weekend! I was about 500 miles from home in very rough country and only had my hand gun and a few supplies so it would be a rough trip back home. Not impossible, but rough. It probably didn't help that I was reading "One Second After" while I was gone :D:

We just had a thread about this a week or two back. It had some really good replies. You might look for it.

The general concensus is that the military is better set to take care of themselves than most of the rest of us are. Our soldiers will be fine. Their supply line, communications, and transportation systems are a lot more robust than ours. And after all the years of cold war, you know there have to be many plans to deal with an EMP disaster.
