Alright so I am gonna buy a .50 cal this summer and I was wondering if they have special stocks for it that really absorb the recoil. Or like a really nice recoil pad for .50 cals.

Also, has anybody here shot one? What was it like? Im 6'3" abd weight 130 pounds. Will it knock the sh*t out of me? Will I be able to shoot it more then once? :D:

If you're worried about the recoil, do yourself a favor and go to the range and see if you can shoot one. That's a lot of money to spend on a gun that you don't know if you will like. Also consider the cost of training and practice. Having a gun that will shoot 2000 meters doesn't automatically make you capable of it. It takes a lot of training and experience. It's sure a LOT of fun if you can afford it. Reloading is really the only way to afford to shoot a .50 a lot.

At 130 it will break you in half, bulk up!LOL. Prone would be best. Also double ear protection. There is quite a volume of noise, enhanced by the muzzle break, also it moves alot of air! It would not be an all day at the range gun. It serves it purpose well and will thrash what ever you hit with it. It is alot of gun that probably is over kill for your real needs. Fun to shoot, own, and reload for. Worth every penny.
The Cheytac .408 might be a better choice?

Practice up with a good .308 or 7.62 1st!:thumb:

Also get used to the idea of spending a little more than average for a scope which takes the recoil.

Accuracy International also offers both bolt action (AW50) and semi-auto (AS50), caliber 50 rifles:

Since I can't find the AS50 on the official homepage it seems to be discontinued.

At least some info about the rifle.

However, an interesting sniper rifle in .338 Lapua Magnum is also the Sako TRG 42. But: it's not a big 50.

But something to the OP:

If you want a big fifty, why ask about recoil? It's like wanting a 400 plus hp car and being concerned about fuel consumption...

If you are concerned about recoil then get a .223 Rem. But that seems to be uncool.

When I was in the military we "had" to shoot 2x per year. We generally shot as often as we could get ammo issued for it. I don't remember the Barret having very much kick. I shoot a Bohica .50 24" on a regular basis now and it has NO kick. I put 10 rounds through it last weekend and 10 the week before. No kick, no strawberry, no nothing. And, the Bohica is CHEAP compared to the Barret. Accurate as hell too.

hahaha

there is a big difference between the .50 beowulf (12.7x47) and the .50 BMG (12.7X99)...the round for the BMG is almost 1.75 times as heavy and backed by almost twice the powder!

As far as the M82, I love that rifle...I am 5'10'' and 210lbs of muscle and it beat the h3ll out of me:thumb:, as far as cost per round the army footed the tab, but if I had the money to get one as a civilian I would in a heartbeat. In a SHTF scenario though? I doubt seriously that it would be useful simply because it takes a lot of experience and practice to use it at its potential (>1500yards) and you won't be coming up against anything you need something that powerful to engage. As it was already suggested I would go with the .338 Lapua:thumb: It has comparable range and a lot less recoil

It will knock more than the **** out of you, it is IMO a bit harder than a 12ga mag.....and one other thing, if you put optics on it DO NOT HUG UP TO THE SCOPE. I watched a buddy of mine cut his eye brow open with the scope, he bleed like a stuck pig,a half moon cut and it was funny for a week with the swelling.

Skip the Barrett unless you have to have the semi auto. The Bohica shoots just as well at a WAY lower price.

As far as what it is used for in a SHTF situ. The .50 BMG is commonly used to disable vehicles by block penetration. Nothing like killing a car before they even know you're there.

How many of the people who say it will kick the **** out of you have actually shot one? I'm 5'10", 155 lbs. My M82 does NOT kick the **** out of me. I am not Mr Macho. The concussion is somewhat annoying, 20-30 rounds is plenty for a day. Subjective feel is about the same as a 12g pump.

The gun weighs over 30lbs with the scope, has a muzzle brake, and the barrel comes back on springs. If it is kicking the **** out of you, something isn't right. I imagine if you were afraid of it and didn't get the stock into your shoulder right thereby giving it a running start, it would hit you pretty hard. Then again, so would a 12g pump.

I love mine, I'm going out to shoot it this weekend.

I have a Barrett 82A1 and my 11 year old daughter shoots it. She produces consistent sub-min groups at 1000M. My point being here that if it was beating her up she 1) would not want to shoot it & 2) would not be able to keep those groups.
When asked about the recoil she says: "I just squeeze the trigger then hang on tight and go for the ride" :thumb:
