You will need some sort of exhaust system to keep the air from getting clouded and the lead exposure risk. A good back stop of dirt but sounds like a cool idea. I would put the gun range on the basement/1st floor.

 

You would have to have a down draft air flow system and a updraft filter system.

 

for ventilation, get two of the big industrial box fans. Mount one sucking in fresh air at the near end. Mount the other at the target end blowing out. Unless you are planning on a commercial range, then the smoke/lead produced won't be enough to worry about hugely expensive specialized systems. Just move the air away from you and you should be fine. Heck I'd just use a single big fan blowing away from me. I'd spend more time worrying about back stops and making sure bullets don't leave the range. What is behind the target end of the building? What happens if a round goes out the roof? How do you keep animals and people from getting into the danger zone while you are inside shooting?

Sorry, out of town...will post them when I get back. Not really planning anything commercial, just someplace for me and the wife and kid, and maybe the occasional friend. Behind the barn is a half mile of farmland before the next building.

 

A half mile isn't much... I'd build in a pretty big berm (u-shaped if possible) on the target end of the barn. You have to be comfortable with liability issues. Unfortunately in this day and age, nobody but my immediate family and I would shoot there unless it was built to modern safety standards.
