Backpacking fishing rod

No offense, but I would not pack one unless it was actually a fishing trip.

I have a small fishing kit that I carry (if I want to fish a little) but no poll. It is VERY easy to make a fishing poll why would you pack one?

Looks like a functional packable poll though. Good find.

Why pack a pole? you can make a cane pole, or some type of tree pole, but you can't use lures well with them. If you had a nice little pole/reel combo like this you could dramatically increase your odds and variety of potential catch.

I have been looking for a good collapsible rod for my kit, as I dearly love to fish. Fishing for me is a morale booster, especially if I catch something. If I had to take my pack, and go, I would really love to have a fishing rod so I could use that for passing the time, and feeding myself.

There is a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like and idiot. For me, that line is monofilament.

Fishing rods are for sport, you would be much better off to get a net or jug line type setup. You want something you don't have to man, something you can set and check later. Just my opinion

Telescopic rods are very handy to have. In Europe Shimano does a range of multi section travel rods. They are very good quality.

How long is your rod and what weight does it cast? What pound line do you use and what lures?

Yes, as was mentioned, static lines and nets will catch you fish in a survival situation. They also allow you to do other things while they are catching fish for you. But they aren't for sport. In fact they might be illegal in some areas!

A pack rod is great for taking hiking or on holiday. Just for the off chance that you might be able to do a spot of fishing. IMO there's nothing worse than seeing fish and not having a rod to catch them with!

I've found a good compromise between portability and playing action to be 3pce rods.

Those telescoping poles are the cats ass. I've used them for years. They're great when you want to stream fish by vehicle. You drive backroads in remote areas, stop whenever you approach a bridge or culvert, and these little rod/reel combo's sit right on your dashboard.Stop, whip it out, fish, close it up,you're on your way.No tangled up mess of long rods. No crushed rods getting slammed in trunk or tailgate.

Mine is 15" and 6' extended, all the modern ones were bigger but I got this one at a thrift store for $10 and it looks like it's from the 50s or 60s.

I looked hard for the smallest reel Walmart sold because it's no use to have an ultra-compact rod and a large reel.

It won't be in the bug out bag but is intended for planed fishing trips. I use Speed Hooks in my BOB along with regular lures.

It's good to know all the illegal methods (cause they work) but you can only train with the legal methods so you should practice with legal method gear the most.

I've been wanting a collapsible rod for a long time just to keep under the floorboard of my car in case i get the urge to drive to the beach, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me as i would be ocean fishing and pretty much want to use a surf rod. My current surf rod is a 12 footer and i use a couple of standby 6-9 foot spinners or casters while the surf rod waits to bring up something. Since i don't have 4x4 any more, i don't get to fish as much as i'd like, but i can always head over to one of the boats and run around the bay for 4 hours. :)

They make surf casting rods that are collapsible.

12' 10" rod collapsible to 32"
9' 10" rod collapsible to 28"

I've seen them, and have always doubted their durability and reliability. For a light action rod in the 6' range, i don't see that as an issue, but for a 12' or possibly larger, a proper pendulum swing can easily take up a lateral area of up to 40'! I just can't trust a collapsible surf rod to handle that much stress. Swinging around up to half a pound of weight on it makes a pretty big weapon.

fish

i was lookin around for a compact rod too a lil while back. i remembered the ad on tv for the "Instant Fisherman". if you think about looking at that one, for your own good (stay away). i read alot of reviews on it and its crap with a capital C. for the telescoping rod?? maybe ok for just a quick camping trip or to keep in trunk...but def not something id care to carry on my pack. just imagine how many tree branches it would get caught on and how that would hinder walkin through the woods. it still looks like a deacent product. i made a quick emergency kit that would work great and you just need a long stick..i might post the video here in a lil bit

I like to take my rod on the motorbike with me, I have a hard tube for it, never damaged yet.
Ugly Stick, 2 piece, 6 foot over all. Wee Shimano spinning reel, makes a great package.

I tried the telescoping rods, but found they were weak around the joins, lost aome good fish though breakages.
