My old 1980's Feather, USMC Heavy as Heck sleeping bag has finally bitten the bullet. So I was looking around last night online and found the following at Wal-Mart (you have to order online). (2) each Everest Sleeping Bags (mummy type) rated to 5 degrees for $40.00! That's $20 each and they will ship it to the store. I think thy had over 700 online reviews and the average rating was like a 4.5 out of 5. Granted you get what you pay for, but for $20 each if they last me a year or two I'm happy! Jut thought I would pass this along to anyone interested.

If you think that crap 20 dollar sleeping bag is gonna hold up, and perform in a emergency, I have a bridge to sell you............

You should have saved your 40 bucks until you could buy something that would actually save your life....

Your sleeping bag and water filter should be top of the line............ katadyn pocket= 300$ solid sleeping bag=300$

and just a word of advice, stay out of walmart for anything besides cotton balls, vaseline, matches, and mountain house.....

when they say rated to 5 degrees what they are saying is that you wont die (for how long?), but you certainly wont be comfortable at all. My wife had something like it from walmart and in 30 degrees was not able to sleep at all.

It isnt that they wont last.. they are most likely just heavy for the warmth.

I carry zero degree rated Walmart / Coleman bags in my vehicles. Have slept in one down to around 20F quite comfortably. They are for getting stuck overnight in the vehicle, impromptu car camping, and for use in bundling up a roadside accident or hypothermia victim. Don't mind if they get bloody or stained.

Not expensive, too bulky to backpack, heavy for their comfort rating, but functionally warm for car camping. Easy to replace if vehicle is broken into.

Mentally add a minimum of 20 degrees to whatever advertised comfort rating is on a big box store China bag.

I own several expensive premium sleeping bags, but I don't discount cheap bags as long as they are utilized within their limits.

E6Jarhead: You'll probably find that your new bags are warmer than your old .mil one (which version I have slept in many years ago). Sounds like you got a good deal for the money. Try 'em out backyard and confirm your comfort level before you go someplace where the temps could kill you. In a pinch, with two bags, you could always unzip one and throw it over the other quilt-style. 7 lbs of insulation (both bags together) is going to keep you warm regardless!

Man...Y'all are amazing!. I know I just joined, and I'm not well known...but I can hardly find a post on here without someone trying to tell someone else how wrong they are on personal preference stuff.

Y'all are right, you do get what you pay for. I think I said that. I said if it holds up for a year or two I will be happy. Those are perfectly good sleeping bags for scouting or backyard camping. I don't expect to die from exposure with my truck 20 feet away at a campsite etc.

I don't need no stinking Bridge. Go buy your Top of the line gear for $300. The sad fact that most wont admit on this forum or many others is that if the SHTF I mean REALLY SHTF that the vast majority of people are just carrying around really nice expensive gear for someone to take from them until its taken from them in turn. If you want to have a realistic discussion of survival chances another thread we can. But its about 90% of what most probably think it is. 20 years in the USMC has taught me a lot about how cruel the world can be. Especially for individuals or small family units.

Anyway Its a good deal no matter how you look at. I don't care if it comes from Wal-Mart, ****s, Bass-Pro or Mr. Lee the Chinese importer down the street. A lot of people out there don't have the money to buy a $300 bag and this will do JUST FINE.

Sorry to go on a rant but geez...lighten up. If I had said this WILL KEEP YOU ALIVE FOR 3 YEARS I promise...then rip it.

By the way I'm two days without a smoke and on edge! LOL

You gotta remember, this site is huge. It has 113,000 members. And we're a very diverse bunch from all walks of life. We're not always going to agree on things. In fact, with this many people, it's inevitable that we will never all agree.

Grow a thick skin and blow past posts like that. Crapping your own thread never turns out well. But I know how hard it is when you're trying to quit smoking too. Best of luck with that and hang in there. You can kick it.
