Ammo can capacity question

So, I'm trying to figure out how to divide up my 7.62 x 39. Right now I have 1000 rounds in one can. I'll be buying more, but I'm trying to think of the best ways of dividing it up and which cans can hold what amounts.

My idea is putting 240 rounds into a 30 cal can. That would give me eight magazine fill-ups. Will 240 rounds fit into a 30 cal can?

How do you guys divide up your ammo? Right now I have a 50 cal can filled with .22, another 50 full of .44 mag and so on.

I just checked one of my .30 cans, it's full with exactly 400 rds. of Brown Bear in boxes (which I just found out are bigger than Wolf boxes). They are set on one of the opening ends, and fit as perfectly and tightly as possible, in length and width. There's 2 rows of 5 in the bottom, and one more identical layer above that, and there's about 7/8" of extra space that could hold a few more loose rounds.

I can't off the top of my head give you all the capacities for different cans and different cals, unless i go out and do a check. I can say off the top of my head that a 50 cal can holds 75 pounds of reclaimed lead bullets and a 20 mm can holds over 150 lbs (OSHA rules do not apply, but that's my max) at around half capacity.

As for your actual question, yes that way of organizing is what most do. I do however have some mixed cans filled for a load out.

I'd recommend you keep your 7.62x39 boxed. As we saw over the last 2 / 3 years - ammo is valuable. If you ever need / want to you can sell 7.62x39 ammo and make money on it. It will be easier to sell if it's in it's box.

I'm still shooting x39 ammo I bought years for $80 per 1000rds.

For those that haven't tried it, a .50 cal can is often too big & too heavy when filled with most pistol ammo and even .22LR ammo. Smaller rounds, like pistol ammo, tend to be too dense; although I do suggest getting one empty .50 cal can and a scale so that you can learn for yourself. I personally would not rush out and buy say 100 .50 cal cans for ammo storage till you've experimented with at least one.. Plastic ammo cans also aren't a good idea for carrying- at times- because they might fail with the excessive weight.
