Maybe they'll learn to cope on their own now.

My favorite quote is
Molly Taylor, 46, of Worcester, Mass., was turned away empty-handed this week when she went to pick up prescriptions of Adderall XR for herself and her 16-year-old son, Luke.
You know it's bad when the parents are as drugged up as the children.

You obviously don't have a child or children with ADD or ADHD. Well let me tell you I have two kids that unfortunately HAVE to take this kind of medicine to concentrate and do well in school. I don't want them on this stuff but if it means the difference of them doing well in school or failing then I have no choice in the matter because I want them to get a good education so they can go to college and have good careers and not be mooches off society. So before you go commenting on something you don't know anything about heed this old indian saying "do not judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes"
if they fail, they will eventualy learn, and progress, without taking a pharmaceutical amphetamine, thats stuff is like the crystal meth on the streets, only produced under better quality control and ''cleaner''. your kids, your life, just sayin

You are correct, I obviously do not!

But that doesn't mean I don't know a thing or two about methylphenidate. Like increased incidence of psychosis, dependence, schizophrenia and paranoia, It even has a name. It's called stimulant psychosis. It's got a lot of nasty symptoms.

Its nasty withdrawal symptoms mean it is addictive and humans are also capable of developing a tolerance to methylphenidate, which means you both need more and manufacturers get to sell you more.

Sure, your kids might be a handful, and they might have a lot of energy. But how do you think people before the modern era coped? Having a pill to take to make it all go away is a very recent development. Humanity's made it a good few thousand years with reasonably balanced children, considering every generation has been just a little bit better than the last.

Save your breath. Those who have never dealt with it won't, and don't want to, understand. They can't comprehend that if it can be fixed by discipline it isn't ADHD.

They probably think that the kid with glasses could see just fine if he really tried, too

Thankful that I never did hop my kids up on that crap. Not that the school system hasn't tried like hell to get me to do just that.

Unfortunately, too many parents overlook the root causes of disorders like ADD/ADHD and assume it just happens. There is however a remarkable difference in children who don't have television, computer games, and a high sugar diet inflicted on them. Not to mention the effects of all the other chemicals in our every day lives, from cleaning agents, sugar-laced baby formula, neurotoxin-infused pillows (added as a flame retardant), processed foods with mercury, high frutose corn syrup, and so on.

Is it any wonder our children are psychotic?

I wonder how many Amish children have ADD or ADHD?

It doesn't appear to be very common. And, they cite the computer/TV thing like you did.

One piece of data that may support Degrandpre's theory is the experience of the Amish, who are known to forego computers and television. This keeps their children from this type of stimulation; ADHD appears to be uncommon among the Amish. Researchers have reported that among 200 Amish children followed prospectively and compared with the non-Amish population, symptoms of ADHD were unusual.

They also don't have the horribly processed food we do. And, I think that's why things like ADHD and food related problems are so rare with them.

5.4 million kids in the U.S. with ADHD??? Time to find the root cause, instead of just drugging them and moving onto the next task.

Thankfully my parents were always against throwing pills down my mouth. When I was in grade school, I would goof off in class sometimes, I wouldn't pay attention on occasion, and had other things on my mind (I was a kid!). All I could think about was goin down to the lake with my friends after school and fish or go ride our bikes around town. My teacher told my parents she thought my friends and I might have ADD or ADHD. My parents told her they didn't believe in this stuff and students a generation ago never seemed to have any problems in school without pills, how come this popped up all of a sudden? Teachers love to have students on pills like these because they don't have to deal with any insubordination.

Fact is, no kid wants to be in school when it's a sunny beautiful day outside. Just because a kid is goofing off in class a little or missed some homework assignments doesn't mean you should drug them down into a zombie trance. If I began acting up too much or missed enough homework I either got a belt to my rear end, grounded, or was put to doing yardwork for a day instead of being out with my friends. Sure seemed to clean my act up well enough for me to succeed in school. I certainly didn't need any pills. Doctors make a living off of having seemingly any and every parent walk in demanding these pills for their children because their kids have ADD or ADHD. It's so over-diagnosed and the pills so over-prescribed it's ridiculous.

While some learning disabilities do exist, the majority of parents need to buckle down and discipline their kids instead of using a "disorder" as an excuse to buy pills that will do it for them. Haha sorry, /rant.

Another one that notes connections between computer/TV and ADHD and even obesity.

My group practice, in Jasper, Indiana, cares for more than 800 Amish families, who forbid TV and video games. We haven’t diagnosed a single child in this group with AD/HD. Obesity is also virtually nonexistent in this population.

I had ADHD.

As soon as I left public school and went to a private school which was happy to cater to my interests, Drugs were not required.

My teachers did not like my attitude on medication. I was too docile, and unquestioning, and complacent and ready to do whatever I was told even if I was bored and the administrator even told me "I was an *******" on my medication.

They took me off of it promptly and educated me in subjects that interested me, while trying to relate core material in a way that would make me understand its value relative to what I enjoyed.

I think teaching methods and schools are the problem. Not the children.

in todays world their is a pill for anything and everything, and the doctors are more than glad to write a script to them, my grandpa alone (some of his meds are needed im sure) is on some 15 different pills a day, thats just not natural, i wonder if cancer cases are on the rise, or this is why we have 12 year old that look like they are 25 because of this new medicated society???!!!

The root cause of casual dispensation of PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS to children has in its foundations the emergence of "CHILD STUDY TEAMS" in the Public School System. In order for them to get the funding, they need "BODIES"...sooo...they arbitraribly "filled those positions". Perhaps the pseudo-scientists, to wit: Psycho-babblists, Socio-babblists, and their ilk, would be best served merely studying rats in a maze and stay out of the realm of "HUMAN STUDY". Just another "PROGRESSIVE POGROM" to justify control. Also, since there has been occurring a systematic abrogation of CONSTITUTIONALLY GAURANTEED RIGHTS, this is another way to nullify the SECOND AMENDMENT...if you are/have been treated with a PSYCHOTROPIC DRUG...because there is "SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU", because the PSEUDO-SCIENTISTS/EXPERTS say there is, you get no SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS and NO EMPLOYMENT in some arenas. These victims are not given meds to help them but rather so we don't have to deal with them. Perhaps some of the problems are caused by a dormant, recessive gene...or perhaps due to never evolving beyond the self-centered, attention-getting mindset, and the appeasement thereof. Excuses abound.

I have high functioning Asperger's, and that most often gets diagnosed as ADHD/ADD/Flavor of the day. I got it from my dad and passed it on to one of my sons. That son took meds during the week during the school year, but as difficult as he could be other times, he's now graduated and when in a strictly structured environment he seems to flourish. The current state of the school systems want little robots for students, not kids that ask odd questions or fail to conform to an increasingly narrowing norm. My wife made the decision to put him on the pills, and I fought it every step of the way, but I wasn't the primary caregiver (I work long hours.)

That said, I have strong issues with pills like these. They give everyone a false sense of security. I didn't have the "benefit" of pills in my youth, nor did my father. He turned Asperger's into his biggest job skill, as did I. My son likely won't be doing that, because he feels that he's been "labeled" (he's 19 now) and doesn't seem to have high expectations for himself. That will likely change when he has to live out on his own (hopefully sooner than later) but I'm not holding my breath.

I once had a kid visit where I work (I do R&D) that I picked out as Asperger's right away. He loved the tour of the lab, but at the end, told me he had Asperger's and made it sound like it was a crutch. I told him that I didn't care. You can use it as a crutch or a lever. I chose to use my Asperger's as a lever, and I am damn proud of having it because that "affliction" is providing me with a great income. When I told him all that, his jaw hit the floor because it had been drummed into this head that it was a problem, not a solution.

add is disputed and denied by many medical doctors out there. im one of those who also believe this is a designer disease. there are no doctors that dispute the existence of ebola, polio or cancer. http://www.chiro.org/pediatrics/ABSTRACTS/Designer_Disease.shtml interesting article. of course im gonna get attacked for this but im used to it. people hate to admit they are wrong. im not saying that this does or does not exist. i am just saying that before you actually take a drug that is chemically similar to coccain, you might want to look at all sides.
