9mm fmj as a sd load?

If ammo was scarce (like right now) and I could only find fmj in my area would it be wiser to sell it for a .40 s&w because I can find all kinds of that right now? Or would it be smarter to stick with the 9 and just use what I can find (probably ball) and have more shots

Nothing wrong with a quality 9mm pistol....or FMJ for SD, IF you can HIT WHAT YOU'RE AIMING FOR......True, higher-velocity hollowpoints will be more effective than FMJ (depending on what/where they hit), but dance with who ya brung.....

A MISS with a .44 Magnum will not be as effective as a flurry of .22 LR's in an eye socket or the mouth....SHOT PLACEMENT IS KING......

You always want to hit the "crunchy center", and do so with the largest caliber YOU CAN CONTROL EFFECTIVELY.....don't sweat the Forum arguments about this caliber versus that caliber, they will go on longer than Religion.....

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE....Then PRACTICE SOME MORE!

Caliber of choice.

I carry a Glock 30 (.45acp) as EDC and on days when I'm feeling puny I carry my Glock 23 (.40 S&W). In either case I will be well served in a defensive social situation.

My brothers (3) all carry Glock 19's and are happy as pigs in, well you know, so carry what you're best able to operate.

That said, except for a real SHTF situation where all bets are off, I'll only load Fedaral HST +p or Speer Gold Dot +p in my personal carry weapons. The thought of a through and through from ball ammunition killing someones child accidentally is more than I can bear.

One of the big things to remember with FMJ/ball ammo in ANY caliber is over penetration.

Hollow-point or even soft lead ammo is designed to expand when it hits soft tissue, which causes more damage to the bad guy and gives it more "stopping power" because the bullets energy is released inside the body. This also results (most of the time) in the projectile staying inside the body (no exit wound).

With FMJ, the projectile is more likely to retain it's shape unless it hits large bone or solid tissue - more likely to pass straight through the bad guy and keep going until it makes contact with a solid surface (lodging in the wall/innocent person behind the bad guy). I've worked hundred of crime scenes and I've seen plenty of through and through shots with all types of rounds, but its pretty much assured with FMJ. With any shot, regardless of ammo, you have to consider your "back stop" and make sure you only hit what needs killing.

That being said - the majority of my ammo stockpile is FMJ. I keep enough HP to load all my handguns/extra mags for daily carry and I pick up an extra box of Gold Dot occasionally when I have a few extra bucks. I just can't afford to buy a thousands of rounds of the high dollar ammo for my long term/SHTF storage.

I might add one correction or clarification to my previous post: Sheet rock walls ARE NOT a sufficient "solid surface" to stop a FMJ round. I have personally worked a scene in which a kid accidentally discharged a 9mm in his parent's garage (FMJ round). It went through the garage wall (2 layers), through a mirrored closet door, through an interior wall (2 layers) and struck a lady in the temple on the opposite end of the house. Granted, it missed all the wall studs, but it still had enough speed to penetrate her skull and completely scramble her brain (DOA before she hit the floor).

I'm not trying to preach gun safety/kids etc., just trying to give an example of things you needs to think about when you choose a round. If you live in a thin walled house or a trailer, think about where that bullet might end up - even several rooms away or outside your house. Are you shooting towards your kids' room, neighbor's house, busy street?

It's all about shot placement. If I go to a GSW and the victim/perp has a center mass hit nipple line to belly button regardless of what casing is on the floor they have most often left the building. Center chest hits aortic, heart, obviously have the most effect. I've treated people with multiple 9mm,.40, and even .45 hits in non vital areas that are maybe bleeding bad but still with us and usually make it.

So did bayonets but I'm not about to put one on my picatinny rail and forgo ammo. A projectile that doubles in diameter is twice as likely to hit said organs. No self respecting instructor/gunfighter would recommend carrying fmj, unless maybe for a .25/.32. The simple fact is that hp DOES perform better/stop more quickly. I'm sorry, but dangerous info is getting to newbies.

When your life is on the line, it's worth spending alil time on gunbot prior. Juries take into account how many shots are fired and if you have to empty a mag, it's not gonna look good on ya. You need to stop a threat IMMEDIATELY and fmj has a far lower probability of making him/her stop before he/she squeezes that trigger/sinks that knife into you. Milliseconds count.

Self-defense is not really the time to consider what a jury will like or not. A good defense lawyer will show stats on how many bullets cops use on average to put down perps. You should shoot the guy down, don't quit pulling the trigger til he's no longer a threat or you have to reload, and if you have to reload, do it quick and then commence anew.

unless you are on pcp, then even a .22 round that hits a non vital like a thigh is going to make a perp either stop or at least delay for a few seconds. Your brain and senses can't simply ignore the intense pain thay ANY bullet would cause to ANY body part.

Shows on tv where a guy is hit 35 times and then ends up killing the shooter are a tad far fetched. How many times have you accidently bumped your head on something or stubbed your toe, etc? It takes a few moments to process and then rub your head and say ouch, look around to see if someone saw it, and then laugh at yourself. It still hurt like hell. IMO

Tell the cops that were in the Miami shootout how far fetched it is. Obviously, North Hollywood shootouts aren't everyday affairs, but seeing as we're here, (S.B.) we prepare for the unexpected. Are you really saying that you feel comfortable fending off a rushing attacker (much less multiple attackers) with a .22? In your own words you admit that it takes the brain a while to process pain. Ever see how quickly a motivated person can close the gap from 7 yards? Nothing short of incredible.

And that's the main issue I'm having, I keep hearing how the only way 9mm will do the job is with quality hp ammo. But literally the 5 nearest stores to me have only had fmj when/if I can find it period. Where as I can find both fmj and defense loadings for .40 all day long.

I will admit though, at work the other day though I was cleaning out an old lady's garage and found about 75 rounds of 9mm so there is some merit to the "9 is everywhere argument"

if all you can get is fmj, you will be fine using it in self defense situation.

I don't understand the reasoning behind some folks saying if it aint 80mm HP it won't work period crowd. if 2 paintballs hit an intruder you are going to mess up his game plan. Ideall? no, but adapt and overcome, use what you got or can get. Soemthing is better than nothing. over penetration is better than throwing your 9mm at the perp.

FMJ is fine...it will put Shaquille Oneal down.
