I'm asking because I've never seen one. Does anyone make a modern bolt action long rifle chambered in 7.62X39? Seems like it would be a nice addition for those in the AK community. I'd be interested in one as well I think..

I like the looks of the CZ 527M. About $650, which is about right. Reviews said quality is spot on. The only complaint was the backwards safety. It's has a high capacity 5 round magazine too..

Also Ruger American, and Howa miniaction....probably others, some may be discontinued but they are out there.
I'll search for those. While looking at the CZ, I read a couple of articles that said some manufacturers discontinued the 7.62 round, but there may be some still out there.

Gotta friend that owns the Howa and I've shot it. Absolutely fantastic trigger and that little gun is crazy accurate. I watched him put a round through a whitetail at 187 yards, blowing through the top of the heart and the animal ran 30 yards.

He bought the gun with the mentality that if his AK's were "bought back" one day, he would still have a gun that could shoot the thousands of rounds of 7.62x39 ammo he has stored.

As it would be, the little gun has turned into.... the first one he grabs from the safe when he heads out on a hunt. ....accurate, effective and very little recoil.

He gets sub-MOA with his hand-loads and 2-3 MOA with Russian-Cheaps. And... he doesn't blink an eye to run steels through that gun and they cycle smooth and easy.

Good thinking.

Back when I had a Mini-14, I bought a Stevens 200 bolt action in .223 for that exact same reason. :thumb: Mini is sold on, but the bolter is still here, along with the ammo supply.

Ammo cost alone justifies the 7.62X39 at my house. Cheap shooting and you don't have to chase the brass. The round has plenty of horsepower for hogs, deer, coyotes, and most other things seen here in Texas. Here's my little AIA M10 that's no longer being made. Any AK mag will work in it. I also run an AR-15 in 7.62X39 that is suppressed for larger groups of hogs.

Not just Texas. 7.62x39mm 125gr MFS JSP at around 18cents per round is plenty for hunting deer or hogs in the Ozarks as well as Muleys outa Colorado.
Well under rated cartridge for hunting and busts deer just as well as 32spl or 3030 inside of 200 yards if the hunter does his part.
Since we here are AK/ SKS heavy, a bolt gun like yours would make sense. ( have plenty of AK mags and a handful of mini30 mags. )

Been hunting hogs around here with an AK pistol off and on. A 10.5in tube generates plenty of horsepower out to 200 yards for pigs/ deer here in TX.
Perfect Cartridge for a brush gun imo.

Rely 2 and three gave the answer your looking for! A NEF Handi rifle on the used market is really not a great option....I have one of the few made so trust me on that one!

The thing you wanna look for the most is one that will handle the surplus steel cased ammo with 310 bullets instead of a barrel for 308 diameter and handle the hardened primers. For example my handi rifles is a awesome gun but I have to buy the harder to find and more expensive ammo with softer non-mil spec primers and 308 bullets as opposed to inexpensive Wolf or Tulammo. My other option is to reload which aint all that cost effective in that round.

It is hard to go wrong with the Ruger American. My now 14 year old has shot two deer and one black bear with his so far. We use the federal fusion ammo in it for hunting but we are saving brass to be able to reload our own hunting rounds down the road. We have used some of the cheap ammo for practice but can't really comment too much on that, didn't really shoot too many.

Part of the reason I went with this one over the CZ or others is that the Ruger is factory threaded. Good trigger on it too. I needed one good gun for teaching my kids and also for use in our elevated blind where they do their first deer hunts. Didn't want to blow their ears out!

For a bit less than the $650 quoted for a cz 7.62x39 one can build an AR in that chambering and have a tack driving rifle. 7.62x39 ammo while plentiful and about the cheapest rifle ammo other than something like Lapua is really not high quality ammo and yes you could reload it to get better accuracy. If I am going to reload a bolt gun I want a full size cartridge. If your state has a law against ARs then I can see getting the bolt gun.

Wish someone would show me one of those "tackdriver" ARs sometime. Never seen one at our club range. They only seem to exist in magazines or on the innertubes. :taped:

Wow, I order the CZ 527 on Wednesday and got a call from my FFL yesterday saying it's here. I never even got a ship notification. Gotta love Bud's Gun Shop..:thumb:

It's a quality rifle by the way. Fit and finish are perfect, and the iron sight are excellent. We'll see how that 6 lb weight handles the recoil..

On my short list for sure is the Howa. Brownells was clearing out barreled actions a while back and several chassis manufacturers are down with Howa. Not to mention Howa has stocked and chassis models available. Whats not to love?

I have never owned an AK but I have an AR in 7.62x39 and I reload for it. I stumbled into a deal on 4500 NEW brass and 2500 projectiles a while back (and that was my share after splitting it with my dad) so I decide that the next new bolt action I buy will be in this caliber. In my area it will handle anything that occurs naturally with one well placed shot out to 300 yards so why the hell not.

I need a lighter bolt action rifle. My old Remington 788 has taken a mountain of deer, but the mountains seem to be getting steeper and it's not a light rifle.

I was ready to buy myself a 527 in 7.62x39 for Christmas. It seems like an almost perfect gun for the thick WV woods. After researching it though, it seems like cracked stocks are pretty common for this gun? That worries me.

Having said that though, where can you get the Mannlicher stock? If I decide to risk it, that's the direction I'd like to go.

I don’t know if it’s a frequent thing, but I’ve seen a couple of complaints on that. It’s probably a combination of a defect in the wood, the area right behind the receiver is small in crossection and the rifle has quite a recoil. They do sell the same rifle with a polymer stock if that’s a concern for you. Also, CZ will replace the wood stock, no questions asked..

On the recoil, I did buy me a shoulder pad to lessen the blow. Thanks to the docs, I’ve lost a lot of weight, so right now I don’t have the built in padding..

I don't see cheap 7.62X39 anymore? has the surplus market gotten tight? I like bolt rifles so the 7.62X39 is not a big deal for me. I do like a round that is easy on the shoulder
Not that I know of. I bought a tin about a month ago and got a good deal on it. There was a better deal on a case, but I wanted something for long term storage. Have a look at Ammo Seek and see what it comes up with.

Seeing as your location listed is California, interwebs stuff is verboten. Boo! No idea on what you would pay at your local gun shop...

For folks whom can order via interwebs, pricing has been stable for a year or 2 at around $.18-$.20 per round. Depending on type, & such.

Then normally ad shipping, which may be pricey as a case of these are heavier & larger vs say 5.56. Figure on an extra .02-.04/per round, depending upon seller, quantity purchased etc.

As examples:

Target Sports currently has Wolf Military classic 7.62x39 at $199.50. Shipped.

$183.50, shipped, for “prime” members. Pretty decent deal on plinkers. IMO

SGammo has golden tiger “on sale” (he’s had it “on sale” around 6 months now...). $189+$26 shipping. Less shipping cost per multiple cases. Great stuff!

As to long term storage, I find repacking in ammo cans far more convenient over tins. YMMV. Easier access & can store charged mags as well long term. Just last week shot a few ammo cans worth of Barnaul 7.62x39, all charged in Tapco slab sides, stored in ammo cans 3 years (I date & tape an ammo box inside cans for us). All ran dandy. I toss a couple desicants inside ammo cans.

Use cans with decent seals. Not really that tricky, have 1 can with a bad seal so far. Use that can for storing some chain.

The real trouble we have with 7.62x39 (&5.45) is the bimetal jackets. Can only run it off Fire season here. Don’t want to pay for the non-magnetic stuff, so fire season sees us just running AR’s.
