They are plastic but the price was good and they are durable and seal. You get 2 for $25 or if you are in the Buyer's Club, $22. They are roomy.

 

I have a couple of those as well. Nice container actually. The only real drawback that I have found is that you can load them up with a lot more weight than they probably are built to hold. If you end up with these I would make sure you don't overload them. (Just a suggestion though.):thumb:

 

Yes, to dessicant. I keep all the little packets that come in practically any box these days. All my ammo, powder & primers are in .30 or .50 cal ammo cans (surplus). Also check the o ring on the lid.

 

There always ammo cans on ebay. I bought a few there a while back. Check it out, sometimes you can find a deal.

More weight than they were built to hold? Um... they were filled with 50BMG rounds. That stuff is heavy.

 

Um....if you would look at the specs. on them you'll notice that they are plastic and it specifically says that they are rated up to 25 pounds. But hey don't take my word for it. Check out their website.

Ammo cans are climbing in price because the military no longer sells them off as surplus. They are now crushed and recycled.

Plastic ammo cans are a great option. You just need to be careful. The Plano brand ones Bass Pro sells have no gaskets in them and thus are not air tight. They aren't ammo cans IMO. They are just non sealing plastic boxes. The ones viperphi recommended have a sealing gasket in them ( according to the reviews ). I would feel comfortable purchasing those and while 12.50 each doesn't sound like a huge deal, you will save a lot of money on shipping. The steel ones cost more to ship than the cans usually cost.

If you do want true steel ammo cans and don't mind the big shipping costs, check out Cheaper Than Dirt. They have some 50 cal cans in amazing shape.

The best deals on ammo cans seems to be at gun shows for now. Mail order is out because they're selling for the same price, but the shipping kills you. The dealers at the shows are usually looking to unload a bunch of them on sunday, rather than pack the bulky things back up and haul them away. There is a HUGE glut of them on the surplus market still, so for now, they're a good value.

My local pawn store gets supplies of steel ammo boxes in, occasionally. They sell for $10-$15. They go quick.

 

Yeah , gun shows offer the best deals on cans. Save any dessicant that comes in products you buy. When you have a bunch put in low oven on baking sheet 200 deg for 20 min to recharge. Then keep sealed in ziploc bags till you need some to pack yer ammo.

I just bought 2 pallets of ammo cans.

180 50 cal cans
And 260 30 cal cans

I am selling them for $13 for the 50 cal cans and $10 for the 30 cal cans.

I am going to take them to a gun show next month to offload some.

Shipping would be a problem. But I would sell them online of anyone is interested.

The gov doesn't crush them. They auction them off and if they don't sell after 2 tries, then the crush them.

I have yet to see them not sell the first tome around here in PA.

 

Gun shows, guns shops and army surplus stores are where I find my ammo cans. They may be heavy and cumbersome but I have some that go back almost 40 years. See if a plastic one will last that long and be air tight.

 

I just got one of the Grade I .50 ammo cans from cheaperthandirt in the mail today. It had a quarter sized rust spot, a sticker on the side, and some sand inside, but other than that it's pretty nice. I'm happy with the price and the shipping wasn't unreasonable since I got some other stuff too.

 

Cheaper than Dirt has what they call grade III for about 10 bucks a can. I bought 10 and they are in great shape. The inside and gasket of most of them were like new.
