Will a 223 fmj 55 gr be able to penetrate a brick wall and still be able to bring someone down on the other side?

I realized just how ineffective the 223 was when I watched a video from the squad dashcam of our local who responded to an armed bank robbery...he pursued the suspect who multiple times got out of his truck and rained down on the officer with an AR...the 223 glazed off the windshield in most cases, never penetrated the car door, etc...each time the officer took cover behind the door, waited for the shooter to finish firing (and well within 50yds btw)..then the perp would jump back in the truck and continue to flee, and the officer would hop back in his car and pursue...like some bad dream for the perp cause he just kept firing a barage of rounds at the cop and they were basically useless...now a 308 would have torn out the windshield and the car door would not have been cover....

look, you wanna shoot coyotes or groundhogs or small wild piggies...223 from a short evil black rifle is just fine..it'll even make a nice mess of a zombie body cavity as long as they aren't wearing their winter coats...

I'm not down on the round.. i do own a rifle chambered in 5.56 but it does have both it's advantages and its limits.

People joke but we shot up an old abandon brick house in bevard nc that was on a friends property. We basically played game called will it penetrate. The 223 penetrated better then the 762x39. I'm an ak guy and was proud that my sagia was taken large chunks out of the brick wall, but the ar penetrated better. That day I also learned to respect the Cci 40 grain solids. I never new 22lr was so impressive

i did this test with 7.62x 39 and .270 both disintegrate concrete blocks to my satisfaction.
as long as said blocks are not filled with concrete when building the wall i feel pretty confident in my ability to disintegrate cement block with either caliber. i would like a .50 and a 5.56 but dont want to add more calibers to stock and the price of those two rifles would allow me to get a check from the power company if invested in solar.

It is my sincere hope that the OP was not planning to risk his life or his families safety hoping an "old" brick wall will stop .223 from penetrating and harming the occupants of his home. If you live in that bad of a neighborhood swallow your pride take a crap job in the sticks and count yourself lucky. If you are behind a brick wall then yes the .223 will penetrate and kill you. If you are trying to shoot some bad guy who is behind a brick wall then your .223 will hit a pipe and he will escape unharmed. That's just the way things happen. Well in my paranoid perception anyway. For further info visit "The Box of Truth". Many examples of how deadly, of ineffective, various loads are. The average house was built to make the contractor a profit, not to protect your loved ones from drive by shootings. Good Luck.

seeing plenty of 855 stuff..the Federal green can on 10rd strippers..have some in my closet and yes, due to the construct of the core...likely better penetration.. I like em cause they are a heavier grain and run well out of my older mini...different twist rate.

yeah guys.. I had "remembered" that video in my mind differently...what had stuck in my head was how the perp got out more than once to rain on the cop and it just did him no good..but when i pulled and rewatched.. I did see where it made it through the windshield...not impressed about a round cutting through a car hood or door..heck my new chevy skin is so thin I could probably poke a #2 lead pencil through it...

but I still say at the end of the day...the fact that the perp had an AR in 223/5.56 (not knowing what ammo he was running)...it wasn't sufficient to thwart even the relentless and admirable pursuit of just one uniform.

Having shot up more cars in my former line of work than I care to remember here is my .02

Windshields will cause deflection and depending on the angle of the strike YES it can APPEAR to completely deflect but that is on extreme shallow angles. Usually it causes a few inches of deviation soma general rule of thumb is to aim at the top of the steering wheel to hit the driver in the head area. 5.56 will punch through a cinderblock or brick wall. Just see Larry Vickers newest .50 call BMG test video. He uses a SAW as a comparison.

Another- "I saw this on the internet and this proves how poor the 5.56 is...."

What I saw: An ill trained criminal who happened to have an AR-15 that did not hit what he might have intended and attempted to outrun the radio. Had he better optics and some practice and forethought, he might have successfully fled..

Personally, I took a spinner rated for .44 magnum, one day, and shot it with 5.56. It blew cleanly thru, almost like it was a drill. The spinner moved very little; almost imperceptible. The spinner is 5/16" mild steel from what I can tell. To this day, I keep it in my office for those that think that 5.56 is weak. I was shooting 55 grain M193, I believe.. I have had repeated offers to weld it up to re-use it; to me, it's better as a reminder of what a 5.56 will do..
