20 Round AR-15 Magazines Worth Stockpiling?

Is anyone stockpiling 20 round AR-15 magazines? I have around a dozen 20 round magazines, which is a mix of Simmonds and pmag AR-15 magazines. I am happy with my 30 round AR magazine stockpile, but started thinking about getting more 20 rounders.

If I were to hand out my AR-15 rifles it would be easier to give someone a rifle, couple of 20 round mags and the same number boxes of ammo. For example a family member would get five 20 round magazines, then you get five boxes of ammo. I have around four of five 20 round magazines per AR-15. My thoughts are to bump that up to maybe a dozen 20 round magazines per rifle.

Then there is the issue with having carriers for 20 round magazines. Maybe order some bandoliers with the 20 round magazines, but will a pmag 20 round magazine fit a classic bandolier?

There are positives and negatives to the debate and I would like to hear members thoughts.

These are the pouches that I have been using for all of my 20rd AR15 mags. I have both metal (Brownells) and P-Mags. Both fit and each pouch holds two mags. Being MOLLE they fit on my "Battle Belt" and on the Spec-Ops "The Pack" that I use on a regular basis.
So grenade pouches fit 20 round AR magazines well? I may have to pick up a few and see how they do.

I used to use them as full-tracer magazines for purposes of directing fires. No need to guess which magazines held solid tracer, especially in the dark while wearing flight gloves.

They also work out nicely for concealment: loose in pockets, mounted on belt line, or held in a discrete chest rig under a cover garment or jacket.

I have one of these low profile chest rigs loaded with USGI 20-rounders. The magazine pockets are a stretchy form fitting material that will accept pretty much any style of AR-15 magazine. 20s fit very nicely.

Mags is mags. I wouldn't ever choose to get rid of my 20-rounders. The idea you have about 20-round boxes of pass out ammo is good and simplifies issuance/magazine loading. Agree.

Ok I am going to say this with my experience. When I was in Nam I tried many ways to carry x Number of Mags with me to have in case of trouble and it was always just around the bend.
I tried several different Pouches they took to long to take out in a hurry if needed.
I ended up with a Sling Bag that I carried across my Neck/Shoulder and when in trouble took no time to reach in and quickly reload my Rifle. I usually carried around 20/25/mags with 18 rounds. According to how long we were suppose to be out on patrol or Ambush duty. Any more than that was to much weight, I was a small guy. Yes I was probably the smallest in my company. I probably carried more than I needed most times, I would have rather had too much and not enough. It was also just as easy to put the empty one back in the bag while under duress. I was willing to carry less food and I guess this is where I learned to drink less water, I always had water when everyone else was out.
That is what worked for me so today I have a bag that I would use, so the same with if the need arises.
there were times we had to be replenished in the field by Chopper.

I know this is probably overkill for what you were asking. I would probably do it on a smaller scale in today's world but the concept is still the same. How quickly can you reload to be able to return fire. Those pouches aren't the quickest to pull a mag from when you are under duress and bullets are coming at you. JMHO

Just ordered a couple of grenade pouches, will report on how they do. Would be nice to have something that can mount to my GI surplus patrol pack or 3 day assault pack.

Swapped out the 30 round magazines for 20 round and heading out to the river tomorrow to scout for a 2021 - 2022 hunting spot.

For 3g and 2g matches I would keep a 10rnd mag for the 77gr bullets for stages that require distances anywhere between 250-540yards. For all the other stages I used 30rnds mags loaded up to 28rnds With cheaper 55 gr bullets.

when bench shooting I like the 10rnd mags so I can shoot prone off shooting rest or bipod.. It was annoying to shoot with 30rnd mags and having to use it as a monopod cause they are so long vs a bipod. And they were easy to identify in a jiffy while running with the gun.

i would say, get them all and find Ways to best use them. Polymer Mags do wear out over time so you can extend their life by rotating out mags.

I don't think mags are ever a bad investment no matter the capacity. However, if we're expecting anything like the '94 Assault Weapons Ban, any mag with a capacity over 10 rounds will no longer be available and those in existence could be classified as NFA items. So, I'd be collecting both 20 and 30 round mags for your AR as well as mags for the handguns.

For trips to ranges where prying eyes can see what you have, I'd keep a couple of 10 round mags on hand as well. These days we seem to have no shortage of tattle-tales amongst us.

I'd say it's a better idea than stocking up on the 10 rounders like I saw someone doing on another thread. I had a few 20 rounders from when I was in, but just bought a few of these earlier in the month.

For under $11 I figured they weren't going to get any cheaper anytime soon. They are OOS there but Botach has them in stock for $12-$15 ea, depending on the color, I don't feel like paying $4+ for the FDE ones over the black & grey ones I got though.

The 20 rounders fit in these packs I got some time back too. They also hold radios & bunch of others stuff. Paid less than $13 for the pack of 5 when they were in stock.

I have a mix of GI 20 and 30 rounders, PMAG 20 and 30 rounders, Thermold 20s and 30s and Amend 2 30 rounders. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. For a gun carried in a vehicle the 20s don't snag on things as bad. I have several of the old GI cloth bandoleers that the stripper clipped ammo is carried in they make good mag bandoleers also.

Contrary to what some Internet "experts" have said for years, the Thermold mags are good to go. Well, the US-made ones more so than the licensed Canadian-made ones. I bought six of the 20-rounds with couplers years ago for dirt cheap from Sportsman's Guide, and the first two I opened have served as my go-to range mags for thousands of rounds.

This thread has convinced me to pair up those 20-rounders with couplers, load `em up with some Hornady 75gr BTHPs and have them set aside for Armageddon.

So what you want to wait to buy the 20 & 30 rounders unitl after they are banned & the pre-ban ones skyrocket in price? Meanwhile the only ones you will be able to find in stores & online retail stores are 10 rounders? Those of us old enough to remember the last AWB aren't worrying about being able to find 10 round magazines if they pass another similar bill.

Back in the day, 20 rounders were all we had, bandoliers w 20 rnd stripper clips too..makes for a smaller prone profile..

that said, 30rnders are nice too, so are 10rnders, perfect for urban compact carry, as they fit inside the mag well and can give a 10rnd mag dump whilst you move to cover and pull out 30rnders...

having an sbr w folding stock and this config fits into day pack/tennis racket bag until needed....

Got a couple of grenade pouches in today, and 20 round pmags will not fit in them, nor will 20 round aluminum magazines fit.

Maybe I can use the grenade puches for bandages or something.
