So... I am actually going to go with the school on this one... if you bring in a butter knife, you can then bring in one of the butter knifes that has a serrated edges use for cutting steaks or someone can bring one that looks like it that that they turn into a "shank"... I know, sound funny, but in the schools today? Wouldn't be surprised...

A knife is a knife - why couldn't they have cut up the pear at home if she was bringing her lunch? And trust me, I disagree with most of the school policies but this one.. nope, the kid was wrong.

Common sense

Because the 'zero tolerance' policy is abused to an absolute degree now. They do not have plastic butter knives in school (at least in my area) or forks but instead sporks because the others are too dangerous or could be considered a weapon.

Common sense is not utilized by school officials (most not all) and you get cases like this. What about a butter knife in the bed of a pickup truck? That incident got my friend suspended for a week for a rusted butter knife left in the bed of his truck. Zero tolerance policy though, right?

My relative got suspended (almost expelled) for 'knife like' (as the school put it) earrings; these were smaller than a finger nail and would do less damage than a No. 2 pencil.

There is no application of common sense anymore. It is almost as if the school system was trying to turn children into mindless, scared zombies afraid of any type of authority, and forbid ever questioning it.

The suspension seems uncalled for, as long as she apologized and promised not to bring in a knife again (as it's against the schools policy).

I think zero-tolerance rules like these are silly, the intended use for such items should be a factor. If a kid brings in a switchblade to use, or to show off to his friends.. Well that's one thing, but for a girl to cut up her lunchtime fruit? Seriously?

Then buy fruit in a cup!

Ya'll are getting WAY off topic and going from the extremes (pencil weapons - and yes, they can be used) to a KNIFE - even a butter one - which shows total disregard for the rules and can't even be considered a "grey" or individual judgement area.

Just a plain over-reaction. In my kids schools, here in Texas, they have similar policies, but every administrator I know applies common sense and judges intent for any incidents that occur. An elementary vice-principle I am very good friends with, had a drawer full of little pocket knives she had confiscated from kiddos, but very rarely would she throw the book at a kid. More times than not, the kids brought the knife with no evil intent, it was for lunch. I personally have carried all kinds of knifes and "Weapons" on school grounds, as I often volunteer and use these TOOLS as they are intended, to help with what I am working on. Never had any problems or questions. I guess in a commie-state like Massachusetts I would have been arrested by a SWAT team. Thank God I live in Texas!!!

A number 2 pencil is a useful weapon if needed - but you can't prepare your food with it.

It is a girl with braces ----- when is the last time a girl with braces was posted in the Post Office as a top 100 wanted?

Oh, there she goes to stop the mass murderer who invaded the school with her BUTTER KNIFE.

I need an aspirin after reading this pig slop.
