Update:

  • Lost the Datrex (It's in the GHB)
  • Added a SOFTT-W tourney
  • Added a HALO seal
  • Ordered Iosat
  • Removed water bottle, added Sawyer filter with bottle (left the syringe out - no room)
  • Added iodine wipes (no BZK on hand)
  • Ordered a 3-pack of wallet-sized Fresnel lenses

Still need to:

  • Buy fence cutters and figure out where the heck to put them - pouch on sling?
  • Buy a Nukalert
  • Add an NPA
  • Swap out Celox gauze for granules to save on space.
  • Buy Nuun electrolyte tabs
  • Swap out glove liners for another set of Mechanix gloves
  • Add a patch that says "GFY" so I can offend everyone equally

Thanks for the input. I feel that my RLH bag is really dialed in for my AO. Now just need to figure out how to explain a 120.00 Nukalert purchase to my wife. Suggestions welcome.

I just don't get it . . . .
In virtually every State, lock picks will fall somewhere under the heading of
Possession of Burglary Tools.
And it's a REALLY good way to experience a true "survival" situation. It's called JAIL.
And if, IF you make it out of the gang controlled Detention facilities of in every single City & State, you'll still have a Court date & possibly a criminal record.
Is it REALLY worth the risk????

If it's the Cops detaining you, trust me, they've seen all your Secret Squirrel Ninja "hidden under my watch"novelty items & have a solution for them.
It's called a Strip Search . . . .
And if its a Military detention, they'll just shoot your a$$ if you miraculously manage to "escape"!
Jeeze, my Old Man & a handful of GI's escaped a German POW camp & "E&E'd" for two weeks with nothing but the clothes on their backs . . . .

6471, if this bag is needing to be used, the cops are going to be far too busy to worry about someone who looks like they're just trying to get out of ground zero.
In everyday normal situations, the cops would have no reason to stop him and rip apart his bag to find the lockpicks.
So basically, he's got nothing to worry about whether it's normal daily life or SHTF.

NAV:

  • Space pen (to be purchased - using tactical pen for now, but doesn't write as well)
  • Mini Compass (to be purchased)
  • Jess waterproof pad

Quick question if you don't mind - what type of tactical pen do you have here? I've recently purchased and started using a Gerber Impromptu that can use Rite in the Rain refills and so far has held up well (I've been using it in the rain all this week without issue)

However I'm also interested in other pens since I no longer carry a kubaton, and would like to hear about people's experience with them.

Lock picks are not illegal in the US and would not have any legal significance or consequences unless you were caught actually committing burglary. They are just bits of metal. We still have some freedoms. Hell, a hacksaw or a screwdriver or a thousand other things could be used to commit burglary.

Edit: except for the 4 states listed below.

OP location shows as Virginia.

So read up

VA - Virginia Code of Virginia - Section 18.2-94 - Possession of burglarious tools, etc.If any person have in his possession any tools, implements or outfit, with intent to commit burglary, robbery or larceny, upon conviction thereof he shall be guilty of a Class 5 felony. The possession of such burglarious tools, implements or outfit by any person other than a licensed dealer, shall be prima facie evidence of an intent to commit burglary, robbery or larceny.

Thanks LP,

You took the words outta my mouth. I'm a law abiding citizen. I don't do anything to warrant a search. And as I think I said I haven't added them to my bag yet, as I need to learn how to better use them and which ones are essential. If I need this bag, I will be the last person the cops are worrying about.

I have the Uzi pen which is solid and definitely could be used in place of a Kubaton. It writes well under normal conditions. It just doesn't write on the waterproof pads. Good thought though - maybe I can get a rite-in-the-rain refill for it.

Big question OP.....what are you supposed to be escaping and evading from?
Am I missing something here?
Good,

The scenario would be stuck in DC or in MD or someplace not close to home when serious SHTF - EMP, CME, or other event that could invoke WROL and driving is not possible, thus forcing me to flee on foot.

The Uzi pen is on my list to try out. I've seen there are several versions of them available.

thanks GoodWrench.
Looks like simply having them is illegal in 4 states. (Miss., Nebraska, Ohio, Virginia)
I was not aware of that.
I wonder if they arrest you for having windshield wipers on your car and a paper clip?
Such laws are as ridiculous as banning all firearms because they are prima Facie evidence of murder.

I hope they put out an APB for a man with a screwdriver after my truck doorlock was broken into by someone with one.

I think people are quick to forget why some of this stuff is purchased and distributed by the government to special forces. And I'm not even sure how many people on here have been isolated in a hostile, foreign area. My guess would be between not many and none. And you realize that these soldiers are given quite a bit of leeway on what they choose to roll with right?

If you can give me a legit hypothetical, maybe I could understand better why I'd need a tin of random stuff in my laptop bag.

Executives are kidnapped and killed routinely when travelling in latin america. A President of Exxon was tied up and stuffed in an airport baggage locker. Duct tape over mouth. His sinuses became congested and he suffocated.

WOW, it must be nice to be psychic & be able to KNOW with such certainty what may or may not happen.
What will the Cops be looking for in a SHTF scenario?
Beats me, but some Dude picking a freaking lock would certainly look suspicious to me.
Seriously, I think we'Re simply having two different conversations. You Guys seem all in a twist over "someday" TEOTWAWKI MAY hit & I'm talking about the other 364 days of the year.
None of my preperations involve carrying ANY guns, knives, painkillers, burglary tools, etc. that could get me arrested.
Why?
Because craps happens. Who knows ? Witnesses may point out the wrong guy. Some gung ho Rookie may conduct an illegal search.
4 years as an EMT & 12 years as an American Red Cross Disaster Response volunteer taught me what really happens when the SHTF.
And 4 years in Corrections taught me what happens to those dumb enought to get caught up in the Criminal Justice MEATGRINDER.
Yeah, an illegal case might get tossed, but what smart person wants to spend 5-10 grand on bail, another 10-15 in Lawyer fees, or risk a year in the Gray Bar Hotel getting butt raped by the Aryan Brotherhood or the Black Guerilla Family??????
Over a freaking set of lock picks that'll probably NEVER be needed or used???
In 12 years of Disaster Response, I never once saw anyone use them, LOL.
But, hey, it's no skin off my nose.
Get arrested for something dumb & you'll VERY quickly learned what a true survival situation is.
