Texas - Health, Safety & Morals - 46.02. Unlawful carrying
weapons. (a) A person commits an offense if intentionally,
knowingly , or recklessly carries on or about his person a
handgun, illegal knife, or club. [Exceptions: official;
actor was own premises; was traveling; engaged in lawful
hunting, fishing, or other sporting activity; security
guard].
- 46.01. Definitions. (1) "Club"... includes... (D)
Tomahawk...
(6) "Illegal knife" means a:
(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches;

what about a knife that part of the blade is a saw so the official blade is less than 5 inches?
like serated? i think a cops going to measure from hilt to tip and it better be shorter than the limit

(7) "Knife" means any bladed hand instrument that is capable
of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by cutting or
stabbing a person with the instrument.

If you can stab with it, it counts.

what if I have permition to carry it out of sight.
and what if I carry it in my pack.
Permission doesn't mean squat. Who can give you permission to break a law? But you MIGHT be covered under the "hunting, fishing, or other sporting" section of the law though. That permits someone to carry a knife longer than 5 inches in TX. Just leave it at home or carry a 4.5 inch knife. Better to be on the safe side if you are unsure.

heres what I carry every day cost me about $55 exelent knife and would suit you well

Sounds like you need a new scout leader. Survival knives are a pretty integral part of camping and outdoor survival. It is foolish to go out there without one. My ten year old has one. He's responsible with it too. You have to teach them, not shelter them.

I dunno I have seen some obtusly large knives it depends what he is labeling a survival knife. the troop leader did not say he couldnt have a knife just not take one over 5.5 in long or if he does keep it out of sight

Remember if it is in your backpack it isn't a concealed weapon.

Far too many troops can't afford the group liability insurance for having knives carried by everybody.

Unfortunately far too many city/county regulations have superseded the Boy Scout Manual...Just like the 33rd Annual The New York City Custom Knife Show is moving to New Jersey because of the hassles of New York City's (not state) knife regulations.

It specifically says that the law is exempted if the pursuit is a legal sporting activity. Camping/hiking with a scout troop is a legal sporting activity.

On or about the person is anywhere you want to keep it. Put it in you backpack and go with the flow. You are completely legal.

a smaller knife will do everything your larger survival type knife will do.
This is a good lesson for survival and backpacking. Hit a sporting goods store and look at something 3&1/2 to 4 inches for blade size..
