I worry about coming across a child in need. I can be a hardass with adults, but a random lost child pushes my sucker button. I'm probably gonna do the best I can to save a kid...even to my own detriment.

Even so, my first inclination upon seeing an apparently distressed child is going to mirror my reaction to seeing a bear cub. Where's mama (or an ambush)?

That is a complex problem that challenges our instincts and morals in equal parts. Even trying to wrap your arms around a shivering child could end up being confused as predation. Jeez, few good outs there.

Note to self: run into wild dogs; not children in distress.

Good addition, Astronomy.

Newness on an internet forum does not automatically denote a lack of experience...nor lack of an honest desire to share thoughts and learn.

I found the OP's question to be thought provoking. It generated discussion to get the brain juices flowing...which is something we can all use.

If you don't know the disadvantages of using steel toed foot wear in the wild, what better opportunity to learn than from a forum such as this (outside of the school of hard knocks)?

Aliens, zombies, hurricanes, earthquake, famine...it's all good whether unlikely metaphor or high probability reality. People are still headed down the same preparedness road.

Feral dogs are a reality. They've been a danger to unarmed solo folks in places like Georgia for many decades. In changed times, they'd become much more bold. I've been trailed on patrol in the Afghanistan countryside by aggressive packs of wild dogs. I'm talking big dogs (90-150 lb pack members). No small dogs in the 'Stan. Any of them able to drag down a man. After dark the streets of Kabul are flooded with urban packs of opportunistic and territorial canines. Thousands of them. I've had to shoot feral dogs in the Southern US that had little fear of humans. Rabies is also a prevalent issue among some of these packs.

I thought about wild/feral animals, and babies, small children, and pregnant women, but realized I'm not all that concerned about them. I'll be armed and able to protect myself with several different methods against the animals.

As to the babies, small children, and pregnant women, the reason I'm not concerned is because I already know what I will do. I will help them the best I can. It is pretty much a given for me.

Just my opinion.

ok, lets be real about this.
the biggest threat to a bo situation now are all the rambo wannabes, paranoid delusionals', and drug dealing gang members who went out and bought up all the "assault rifles" and ammo that went with them.
yeah, that's scary for sure. get out now before it's too late.

Have you tried to hike a long time in steel toed boots? I have to wear them often at work, and that would be one of my last choices for long distance footwear. Heavy, colder/hotter than just leather boots, wears out the toes on your socks quicker.
Off topic a little to the OP but........ I have to wear steel toes all the time and I'm on my feet most of the shift on concrete. I had the same issues, I'd buy one size larger for more toe room which helped quite a bit but even then a pair of heavy work socks with the reinforced toes would only last a couple months before the toes were gone and I had enough work socks that a pair only got worn once a week at most. I switched to the steel toe shoes postal carriers wear about a year ago. Light, comfy after a brief break in period, not too warm in the summer, warm in the Winter with right socks and have yet to wear the toes out of my socks and I don't have to wear "work" socks now to keep the toes from wearing through. They are even halfway decent looking and are holding up better than any I have ever owned. A little pricey but they are well worth it, that's what my feet are telling me anyway. ;)

The BO Hazard that most concerns me ? The initials are there. B. Obama - seems the Administration is trying to dictate everything to Americans, that I am afraid that if an event happened they would figure they know better than we, and for some reason forbid us or attempt to keep us from bugging out. Yes BO is my greatest fear.

You hear that guns are bad, and having X amount of preps is also bad.

Been on this earth long enough to figure out what legal and God given rights are best for me in determining when I stay or move, or the legal actions I elect to take in the case of a disaster.
