I'm Steve & I live in Rochester, NY. {hour East of Buffalo, think Lake Ontario}
A few things about me:

• I recently sold a 36" TV for $100, then used that same $100 to get the Jim Rawles survival course.
• I had bought that 36" TV at Best Buy the day after 9/11 so the students in my social studies class could have a TV in the room that actually worked. Most classes on my floor gathered to watch the news on that TV.
• I was laid off from teaching due to 'budget cuts' several months later, then re-hired as a sub, then let go, then re-hired but sent to a different building.
• After being assaulted there while trying to break up a fight, I quit teaching at the end of the year, later going to work for a social services agency helping kids with emotional issues.
• Helped those kids for 3.5 years until a spiral fracture disallowed me from working with them.
• I am currently planning my next move, getting my house in order in case things go bad. Ok, worse than they are.

Looking for other people from my area (there's a NY sub-group?) to network with. I'll also, no doubt, have a lot of questions.

"yet another WNY guy" Part 2

Thanks everyone. I'm surprised (happily) that just a short while after writing an intro people are already saying 'hello.' Few more things about myself:

• My SN comes from the security guys on Star Trek in those redshirts who'd (inevitably) always got killed. I'm in serious need of proper equipment & training, so at the moment, my chances are pretty slim if things get bad quick. But I'm creative & have gotten preparations underway, although I could use 3 more months before I'll sleep easier.
• I'm sort of a weird mix in that I lean to the Right on gun control & border security, yet lean to the left on the environment & personal freedoms.
• I don't have any children, but did adopt a Dalmatian-Whippet mix I've named 'Hope.' So having to stockpile pet food/supplies for her as well as myself.
• I'm an Eagle Scout, & the 'Be Prepared' mentality has come back with a vengeance. That's why I'm here.

Thanks again to everyone. I'm going to do some reading & maybe some posting before I start throwing out my questions.

Hey Steve, welcome Brother. I am in the Canandaigua area, but right now I am in Afghanistan (courtesy Uncle Sam). I had a freind who was a city school teacher and I know what you are talking about. My advice to you is to get a notebook, start writing everything down. You will invariably have a list a mile and a half long. Start with the basics (water,food,first aid, defense) and prioritize. Ask questions and do lots of research. Eveyone here is more than happy to help. But remember, that most imporant piecee of survival equipment is that 3.5 lbs of gray matter between your ears !! Think first and don;t give into emotion or follow the "sheeple". Wish I were home to help you out bro, guess we'll have to link up when I get back.

Murph, stay safe. My buddy just got back from a tour over there with the 27th Bde Special Troops Bn. Also, in August my kid sister got married at Inn On the Lake in Canandaigua. Beautiful ceremony. (BTW, your advice was good)

Hi Steve,

Welcome to the boards. I am guessing that you must of been woring with special education from what you wrote. Just sounds like it since my dad used to teach in the special education area until he retired at 60. A few of my family members are doing social services work right now also. Both area are pretty tough areas to work in but rewarding to help people.
