This doesn't surprise me at all. I've read about it happening overseas but not here until this article. I don't think a novice would be able to steal a whole hive. If I jostle mine they come pouring out. This seems to have been done by beekeepers or people who wear suits and steal them to make a profit.

The only way to prevent a hive from being stolen in most countries is to pay someone to watch it 24/7.

Other countries cannot comprehend the level of honesty in this country. Accordingly, I'm going to blame this on an undocumented worker with a rap sheet of at least one unlawful entering.

Thieves

As in anything their are beekeepers that look for a "fast" buck. One wanted to put gum next to my property line fence to "Acquire" a wild hive just over on neighbor's side. Nope! not on my property. He's selling swarms of bees for 100$.
Don't have the faintest idea what he is charging for gums, he'll also buy those with out any questions and resell.

Hey now, you do know we get this grillin twiced as much, right? Too southern for the north and too northern for the south. And I would ask you, Southern man, where was Booth from? :D:

I saw this on the local news yesterday. I would imagine it was done at night?

With the 'bee disease' destroying so many hives, and more farmland being planted due to high commodity prices, bees are getting both scarce and critical for crop pollination.

Wherever there is demand, there will always some thieves who will supply.....

The answer is monitoring the hives using something like the trail cams that hunters use, if you don't mount video cameras. All you need is areasonably sharp image, particularly of a car, license plate, or a face, or whatever...gives you a place to start...
