It has to do with their comfort zone being invaded. They don't want to realize their way of life can be gone at any moment, and there's not a damn thing they can do about it.
True, although it's ironic for people who seem so obsessed with buying every insurance policy on the market - except preps.

There's no easy way to get through to them imo.

When I explain to family and friends that I am prepping because of 1. Loss of a job, 2. Hyperinflation, 3. Economic instability, it makes more sense to them. And this is exactly why I prep anyway. I don't believe that this country will ever go to crap, but I do believe in personal SHTF scenarios. If the economy doesn't rebound soon, we could see a loss of jobs. Also, it's no surprise that food prices are going up and will be higher next year. So, I'm stockpiling food because if gas prices continue to rise, then I may not have money for food. As for ammunition, I enjoy plinking so I am stocking up to some degree because of the fear that ammo prices may rise sharply next year. But I don't believe we're all going to be running around like Mad Max so my "stock" of ammo isn't very much compared to what some people say they have on here. I just like to plink and do a little hunting.

But again, prepping for realistic scenarios is why I prep. I guess it depends on what your prepping for. If your telling them your prepping because of the impending Zombie Alien Apocalypse, then I'd suspect people wouldn't understand that.

You should remember that you are attempting to change their thinking and you have little if any chance of doing this. It would be just as hard as trying to change someone's religion or political views. In order change a person's view it first takes a major event in life that would force them to challenge long standing beliefs.

I agree with this, because that's exactly what happened to me. I had a successful business for years but the recession killed it. Made a great living and now I don't have near the income I used to. Opened my eyes to become prepared for the next SHTF situation in my life.

You do realize by being evangelical about prepping, that you have shot your families opsec right in the ass
Nah, by the time people figure out they're screwed I'll be sipping pina-coladas in a lodge.

If they aren't smart enough to do a little forward thinking then screw them.
Not sure if intelligence has much to do with. Pretty good people the folk I talk to, they just cant or wont fathom the reality we live in.

What is it with the mental block that affects people when you mention prepping? It's like showing a dog a card trick.

The person right below your original post hit it dead on... comfort zone!!!

No one wants to be uncomfortable, but to me those that do nothing or refuse to do nothing ...got nothing coming. If they are that weak minded that everything revolves around their cell phone, the I pad, and the kindle.... then to hell with them.

Maybe it is that simple. I still get the feeling they've been desensitized somehow. It's like the media shows them fear all day long and they've just switched off, y'know?

Just imagine how much better off the world would be if everyone prepped- less raiding and looting if tshtf, quicker recovery. Not gonna happen though is it.

Delayed gratification. It's a difficult thing in this society. Also people may say, "You want me to spend money now, for something that might never happen?" Same reason people only buy insurance that they are required to. When individuals do not recognize the likelihood of an eventuality, they won't spend time and energies into a contingency. I live in PA. I don't have earthquake insurance. If I lived in California, I would. This, is pretty rational. It's hard to convince people that SOMETHING big may happen, and to prepare. Prepping, is by many accounts a BETTER form of insurance for many types if disasters. Why rely on FEMA to help? **** could be another katrina.

Idk man, I'd rather go without my toilet roll stockpile than lose my stupid sense of humour...and stupid optimism would go a long way after shtf. ;)
I think that attitude is extremely important. However, I think there is a definite distinction between hope and optimism. To me optimism implies that one ASSUMES that all will be well. In my line of work, this approach to any issue usually leads to disastrous results..:

There's a ton of factors that could attribute to this.

People don't like to feel vulnerable. They'd much rather believe that the government or some other outside source is going to be responsibe for and succeed at taking care of their needs if disaster were to strike.

Like someone else said, the stigma that comes with it. People don't want to be labeled as crazy, especially younger people who really value societies opinion of them. Unfortunately the prepping community has been ignorantly labeled crazy sometimes.

Also, people have a keep up with the Jones' attitude. If the neighbor has a new car, they need one. So people find themselves in never ending buying of luxury items that are completely unnecessary. Simply put, people would rather spend $1,500 on a big screen tv that they'll definitely use and everyone will see as opposed to $1,500 on preps that they won't necessarily use or show off.

Lastly, people don't think very much about their future, the consequences of their actions or the like. They live a hedonistic lifestyle that they believe will not catch up to them or have negative consequences.
