Why should I be using mylar bags? As in, what is it in the mylar that makes it essential? I have lots of mylar for my indoor greenhouse, but in roll format. Just wondering if the sheet material could be adapted to food storage since I have it on hand.

The mylar is not permeable,so whatever you store in those bags remains fresher longer.Usually used in 5 gallon pails,as the plastic in the pail is semi-permeable.You may be able to use what you have,if you can cinch it up fairly tight, maybe zip tie it.

Thanks! So in theory I could line a container with mylar and use some sort of sealant around the edges? I've got at least 100 sq. feet of the stuff sitting in my closet.

could just do it the way this movie shows, just seal it all the way on all four sides. I would do that then make sure it holds before doing all your buckets.

and also check out a member here i think shows how to do it as well.
