Many here seem to discuss the problems that America is facing and what factors that could cause a future Collapse. I am not an American so I guess that most of you will not share my perspective of the situation. I do not believe that the problems facing America (or any other country can be related to a single factor; the problems are many, the number of actors that must interact to solve them are many and the problems vary between nations, regions and local societies).

But if you were an outsider, looking at America from a pair of eyes from the outside; what are the problems that you would see America facing?

This may be viewed as a little provocative; but this is some of the problems that I see
• A large dependency on Fossil Fuels and Especially Oil. America peaked in its oil production 1970 and the production has declined ever since and today America imports around half of oil it uses. The infrastructure is in many cases poorly adapted to making a transition towards other alternatives other more sustainable alternatives.
• After the end of Cold War market oriented capitalism is now the only remaining economic system and it has so far brought unprecedented economic growth and a standard of living to many people in the world. But there are also down sides to this paradigm: market are almost totally focused on short term profits, the distribution of wealth within and between countries is extremely uneven and the process of Globalization has resulted in a situation when much gods is imported from other countries (this could make America extremely vulnerable in the case of a severe economic depression or changed relations with states that it depends on for goods)
• America is as the only remaining superpower engaged in extremely expensive state building mission in Iraq and Afghanistan. America has the highest military capacity of all the countries in the world but at an enormous cost, lately the military has also become more and more dependent on private contractors for operating and maintaining complex weapon systems and for logistics, training and other tasks (Private Military Companies and Private Security Companies)
• A political system with only two political parties that closely resembles each other. The political focus often seems to be on the buzzwords like “Terrorism”, “Freedom”, “Liberty” etc instead of directly discussing problems.
• Many issues like man-made Global Warming are extremely controversial, making it hard to discuss problems from a united standpoint.
• Environmental problems and the depletion of renewable and non renewable resources; desert cities that are almost totally dependent on water and other resources that must be transported large distances.
• Economical and Financial Problems

So what are the problems that you see America facing? (I know about Obama, Socialism, Communism, Liberals etc but please be as specific as you can)

I would add out-of-control Corporatism, and the further 'personization' of corporations under the law.

The increase of money in elections and the decrease of accountability for where that money is spent, or whom is providing it.

The continued sensationalization of the media. Educating the public about issues falls far behind the profits that celebrities and sex scandals bring.

And the further polarization of society. You may say the political parties resemble each other, but they have divided the nation into two.

Cell phone users.

It is a bit hard to explain why that is a problem. Since it only a manifestation of the mindset of a Society that has gone off the deep end in regards to how we live our lives. Sure it (cell phone) can be a useful tool and even be a matter of life and death in some situations. However as a metaphor it shows how shallow people in the US have gotten in the ability to do things for themselves.

Putting that aside for the moment. The biggest problem people face is finding gainful employment in a Technological world where most jobs have been taken over by machines. There is only so many jobs of tending the machines not nearly enough to keep every one busy. I am no Luddite and love the labor saving gadgets. I just see that Society is not setup to cope with people unable to earn a living due to the changing effects.

You give a very good perspective from an outsider's view.

There are other issues as well. With economic collapse comes greater disparity between the rich and poor. The rich and those with disposable income can profit greatly during a depression. This creates resentment and outrage, leading to class warfare. People will not starve before they revolt when the economy completely collapses.

It's too late to debate global warming. It's here at this very moment. A good part of the country is sweltering in record heat. We can't change things now, if we ever could before.

We need to cut our consumption of fossil fuels in half, immediately. But that ain't gonna happen.

People who are self-reliant and can survive without electricity will have a leg up. It might not be enough to save most, but it surely will help.

Its a mistake to think America will collapse. What will collapse is the current corrupt political system. The number of people on welfare while having increased remains a small % of the population. The number of people who ID themselves with Dem.party values remain in the minority. I know it appears to be a contradiction. In America when things are going well most people don't pay attention to Politics. Thats when the wheels run off the tracks. The majority of people will back the person who's plan it is, to restore America, Not fundamentally change it. The majority of the American people are like steel, the coming fire will only strengthen them.

The things you listed are problems that have solutions. There are only two Dangers to America : Obama and Progressives ! The Danger is two fold. The Damage they can do before being voted out and their desire to hold on to power in any corrupt way they can.

What I see as a failing in America is the distruction of the American family and it's involvement in the community.

Familys have been dissassembled in America. The old will not be taken in by the young, the younge will turn their elders in or work secretly behind their backs to get drugs and ********s that are legalized through the government.

When the citizens turn to the government for help instead of their families, they put themselves in a dangerous position. That position was greatly pointed out during the Katerina hurican crisis and the BP oil crisis, again in the Gulf of Mexico. Boy have they been getting hit bad down there.

In past historys, the families and communities have band together to strengthen in numbers and help each other out of a crisis. It is insane for our citizens to actually believe that the American Government will be able to help anyone out.

As Americans, we had better get our families back together and strong again, or we will all be dieing in the streets alone.

Damn! Agreed all around, sir.

I think if there is going to be a big collapse, it's going to come from corporatist greed that is protected and supported by politicians who take money from the corporate entities. And it will be poorly reported on by corporate-controlled media, and poorly understood by our generally poorly educated populace.

We are over regulated and over "protected". The average American is viewed by the elite as too stupid, too uneducated, too naive to manage their own lives. So we are told how we have to raise our children, we must have auto and now health insurance, we can't possibly make the decision ourselves whether to take a certain medication or not. We have to be told in large font bold letters that HOT CHOCOLATE IS HOT. Our children can't have a hood with a string in it. The cord on our coffeepots can't be more than a few inches long. Our gas cans have to have stupid antivapor locks on them that make the cans about useless.

No wonder the average American can't conceive of life after TEOTWAKI. Who would tell them what to do?

Voters will be totaly responsible if America collapses! Or maybe the lack of voters! Less than 50% of eligible people register and on any given election you will be lucky to get 50% of them to the polls! And when they vote they dont do their homework, vote along party lines, and keep re-electing the politicians that have everything messed up! This nation will collapse simply because not enough people get involved and then whine when tshtf. The eligible voters are the ones who let this crap get out of hand and we will all pay the price!

- over reliance on technology to solve problems... as opposed to people
- inability to effectively manage change in a constantly evolving global environment
- [related] knee jerk policy reaction to external influences that cause conflicts with America's founding principals (think Patriot Act, TSA, etc, etc)
- a sense of apathy from increased quality of life institutionalized over multiple generations

groan. give me a break. Most of our problem would be the same or worse despite Obama or the progressives. Anyone who thinks that a different president or Congress would have a magic pill to make all the world better again, is in la la land. Think!

unfortunately the parties are the ones who nominate their front runners, it sucks that the race really only comes down to two a**holes, now its really just the less of the two evils at that point.

thats why i am starting a grassroots movement to elect a guy on this board named FarmerChad, I'm just writing his screen name on the ballot when it comes time. i have no idea if he meets the minimum requirements, but it works for me.

FarmerChad for president 2012!!! :thumb:

I dont think you can write in vice anymore, but I would elect Crutch as VP!!!

i dont think they would accept the nomination if it came down to it, hell i wouldnt either. nobody wants to have to eat this **** sandwich.

The dumbing down and liberalization of the young, not to mention the lack of true education, through the infiltration of the school system over several decades is a major issue that must be addressed (and it will not be fast, easy or cheap) in order to rebuild a decent American society imho. Teach the kids HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Teach them respect for authority (but also instill in them the ability to reason so they will not submit to illegitimate authority either). Teach them the basics so they can learn to do their own research, and will!

PS I agree with all the above posters too (except I do think there IS a very very likely chance that America is going to fall off the edge because none of these things can be 'fixed' fast). I think we need a fall in order to properly teach the lessons that everyone needs to learn so we can begin again, and come back 'stronger' as a proud independent nation - not as imperialists.

One of the biggest problems with America is our unshakeable belief that we're the smartest, hardest working nation in the world when in fact our educational system is second rate and the average weight of an American adult is obese. We are a nation in need of one giant high colonic to wash away about a hundred years of accumulated sh!t in the great alimentary canal of our national psyche. Fortunately, the impending collapse of our economy is about to put us on a forced diet.

Go to any developed nation and then return to America. You will immediately recognize after the casual observation of our citizens that we are a nation walking around in a junk-food induced fugue state that is riding out the last of the momentum produced 50 years ago by a once-productive society. We are, in short, exactly the kind of slow-moving cud chewer that gets picked off at the water hole by those possessing sharper claws and long fangs.

Problem #1 - Political Correctness

Problem #2 connected to #1 - people are taking God out of everything they can. For example, the pledge of alleigence. NBC very blatantly edited out the phrase "under God" when the pledge was said before some big sporting event (tennis?) recently.

O'bama often leaves out an important part of our Declaration of Independence "that we are endowed by our creator with life, liberty and the pursuit happiness."

Foreigners who come here don't even bother trying to assimilate as the immigrants of the Ellis Island days did. So many people live here and don't even speak the language or share the basic values of our country. I know that this is a problem that you all have in Europe as well.

If I decided to move to Italy, Spain, or France, I would definitely want to learn the language and embrace the culture of my new country.

ohhh, I have to say I agree with you, as scary as reality is. I'm not really sure what the average weight of Americans is, but it's overweight, that I am almost certain. I think obese may be a tad of an exaggeration.
