i mean yea the diffrent political groups and such, but why go looking for fights? We are all just trying to be prepared, and fighting does nothing to help that. So why dont yall keep your opinions to your self? Didnt mamma tell any of you that? I know mine did so, why look for trouble by stating that the outher side is wrong, and why not just prepare????????

I tend to agree. I was taught if I had nothing good to say, don't say anything. I TRY to go by this.

BUT I think the argument will be that that is why there are specific areas of this site. I don't think there is much arguing in the preparation threads. People like to voice there opinion though and that is why there are specific places for that here. I would recommend you only go to the preparedness related threads if that is what you are looking for.
That's a good and valid point Pugsrock.
However I think it's just human nature and in one sense it's usefull in that you get to learn what other people with other beliefs and practices are like which could be called 'preparation' of sorts.
If we are to survive in the future we will all be better prepared if we are able to hold a discussion rather than slaughtering each other because of a few clashing beliefs.
It does annoy me too at times but when you stand back and look at it I think it's more productive than destructive.
Just my humble opinion.

Take time to read this. Maybe it is to the point of some of what you are asking. Its in part about fighting over ideas and why we need to do it.

What sort of opinions are you talking about tho...? Awful big percent of what is posted is an opinion. Out of competing opinions, well or badly stated we see some sense usually.

Now of course, sometimes people like to just butt in in and say something derisive. For example: One time i offered the opinion that a marlin 336 is probably more accurate than an M14. That was based on my personal experience. Now, "s.....k" thought it suitable to respond by saying quote, "HAHAHAHA" , do i really believe that, and how old am I. Well, that was good for a fight until he just got too offensive.

Be that as it may, if I can paraphrase your question a bit, are you wanting to know why we cant just keep our opinions about the personal qualities of others to ourselves?

I'd say its two reasons, basically.

One is, some people of primitive brain think that attacking the other person is a way to negate their ideas.

The other is, some people are just plain jerks.

But hey, its kind of the free market here, if you dont like how it is dont come. You are not going to change anyone.

One of the biggest problems I see on this site is: someone asks a valid question about a certain item and everyone tells about what they use. They don't offer any answers about the certain item or question, but brag all about their stuff.
Another problem is people asking a question that has been asked by forty other people.
Just read all the posts or at least use the "search" feature.

its the net man, everyone is in shape, has all the food for years, has all the ammo, the gear, the bol, the skills, the 15 inch pecker, the fastest car and highest 4x4, biggest boat and best airplane to soar the skies...

There's 3 kinds of folks on survival forums

bullshzzers
doers
and those just learning.

the problem is when those newcommers are awed and taken to BS'rs that post such great tid bits of copy pasted wisdom or regurgitated info from else where.

Thats when folks that have BTDT get annoyed.

i could care less if some guy said my way of packing a pack is wrong or if my gear isnt right or if im wrong in how i show folks how to save weight when backpacking.....personally until that guy shows up in person or post pictures/vid of him personally doing it, he;s just a blow hard wanna be from the web.
No effect at all to the real world that im living in.

You can tell whos really thought things through, whos really used their gear, whos blowing smoke by how they post and what they post about.you can tell whos new,, who isnt..

so while those views posted may be abrasive to some, you really have to think about what a person says to make sure they arent just trying to get you to think or they are being down right rude!

ive been accused 1000 fold over for being to blunt and rude, my goals are to wake folks up, get them to think, and keep them based in reality, at times that doesnt go over well when its a cloud of **** over someones parade!

YMMV

just remember its the net, take what you can, leave what you may, but dont ever let it bring ya down.:thumb:

If I keep my opinions to myself, then only the stupid opinions will be heard.

Exchange of ideas is the only shot we have to evolve.
I look at it this way. First, it's hard to communicate in writing only and not verbally and with body language. I think this leads to some misinterpretation.

Second, in the non-political/non-religious threads, I would hope that if I post a question like, "Here's what's in my bug-out bag, what do you think?" that people would critize my preparations. Without constructive criticism, how am I supposed to improve?
Human nature. In general, the ones who are jerks on the net typically do not show up for gathering, meet and greets, campouts, shoots, misc. get togethers.

So many folks build an online "personna" based outside of the real reality of there life. It's sad but I've seen it happen so many times it's unreal.

Others feel it's necessary to brag about "what they have" or talk down to others in order to feel good about themselves. There's a guy like that on another board, never really offers anything useful, but goes on and on about the "substantial preps" he has. Supposedly has an AE system, shows pics but then says he DOESN'T use it, it's just a backup. Realizing how much he has spent on some of these components (cause we use some of the same stuff) I asked him politely why he didn't actually USE it. I guess he took offense to this. My thought was, why would someone (supposedly) tie up almost $10K in AE equipment and NOT use it? He got defensive, started crap, went right to personal attacks, etc. Anyone with a little ACTUAL EXPERIENCE doing some of this stuff could tell everything was "theoretical" with this guy. He had read about it, "planned" to do this or that, designed graphs and charts, but hadn't actually DONE it. For folks like that, finding out that plans/ideas that they have clung so dearly to might not be feasible, it offends the heck out of them.

For some the pride issues online are intense. They believe they really are someone online and get offended when someone else comes along that actually does have some experience or useful info.

Now I fully believe in open and good "discussion" relating to important topics. Sometimes this can get intensely heated. IMO, it's o.k. to attack the IDEA or topic, but personal attacks just make you look immature.

Constructive criticism is the key word there. I don't mind someone telling me of known faults or shortcomings of a piece of equipment but a "it's a piece of crap" without telling me why irritates me.

One reason is that some people are letting off steam in a way that is safe. By that I mean if they were to say the thing that they type here in person they may get their teeth knocked in. That safe distance allows them to feel like an "internet badass" without having to answer for their statements.
