Does anyone know of a place to buy whole grains and long term storage food in the Houston area? I know that leading up to Y2K there was a place somewhere in north Houston, but what about now? It seems that in a metro area of this size, we shouldn't have to mail order.

Thanks.

Texasmom, the LDS church has one of their canneries there in Houston. Have any LDS friends? If you don't, make some or order directly from the church on their web site (free shipping!) The majority of their stuff is organic as well.

on Airline between sylvester and harty

check allied produce and the other suppliers there. I buy my bulk 50lb bags of beans, rice, and other things there. I have not checked to see if they sell bulk grains, but they may.

Lamb is 100% correct. Get in touch with your local Cannery of the LDS church. I am sure if you go to your local ward, and ask if there is anyone who would be interested in going with you as a member, you may find a few takers and make a day of it. You can also go to www.providentliving.org to get ideas of what they have at the cannery and the prices. I am a memb er of the Church, but I am not positive you need a member to go to the Cannery, call them and ask, the staff there may be able to help you do your canning of the wheat and other items you need too, or if you are just buying in bulk, and planning on packaging at home, I am sure you may be able to just go and pick up an order. Either way, there is an order form in a PDF doc at providentliving.com that you can use to check the prices and fill it out and take it with you. Good luck!
